after about 3 years of business travel, i've come to the conclusion that messenger bags, aka man bags aka satchels are extremely convenient in carrying all your stuff without filling up your pockets or carrying around a bulky backpack.

when i'm at home i get crap from my friends for using it, why?

on top of that, they look pretty fashionable and fabulous;)... discuss?

Who cares what they think. I've never dissed road warriors on how they did things. I question folks that go out for the evening and think they look "Pulitzer" or some crap like that.

Replace it with a laptop bag, and people will just think you have a laptop, and that will make you cool.

Or a briefcase, that's what one of my coworker does. He has this 1980's briefcase he carries his stuff in lol

you should probably take the rainbows and ponies off of your messenger bag.

If you are carrying something bulky, it is the best way.
I carry heavy camera crap, and I've gone through a ton of backpacks, sling bags, shoulder bags, etc. Nothing is as fast and easy to use as a messenger type bag. (Except belt systems)
And most are made from material that is very water resistant.

I think it depends on how you use it whether it's gay or not. If you need a bag for business purposes, or other pragmatic reasons, it's a fine bag. If you routinely carry it around like a purse, it's gay.

it's a tounge in cheek remark. but the one i have kicks ass and is well thought out.

I know. :)

There is nothing wrong with it. I would probably have one if i could fit my important items in it.
I personally almost always have some form of backpack (samsonite yay)to carry around my items. Not that i like backpacks more, it is for me a necessity to keep the weight balanced.

I carry my laptop and accessories in a messenger bag. There definitely are some that look more like a purse than a bag, but if you get something fairly neutral you shouldn't have any trouble.

At the end of the day, I always go by the same idea. It's not the clothes / gear / hair / style that makes a man manly. It's his persona. Who gives a crap what others think of what you're wearing? If you like it and you're a man, it's manly.

Earlier this year, my company gave all of us employees leather messenger bags. Mine is thrown in the back of my car, buried under books, my umbrella, etc. I have no need for it and wouldn't be caught dead using it. I can't find anyone to take it off my hands either. The company logo is on the front or I'd eBay it.

I read this and visualize that someone is reading this post and yelling :
"I fully agree !" . And then puts on his high heels to go to the groceries store.

when i go out, i have a sort of bulky canon g11 camera that i feel i can whip out real quick when it's in my messenger bag. but usually when i use it it's for business or sightseeing so both those reasons are valid!

I carry one daily. Took a few too many tries getting the right one. The one I carried through university was army surplus, but looked very purse-ish due to a narrow strap.

Cotton canvas, wide shoulder strap like Jack Bauer's is the "go to" gold standard. They suck ass for carrying anything heavy though. I took the strap off my laptop bag because it was too heavy for one shoulder, and constricted my breathing across my chest.

I remember meeting a buddy at Chipotle for dinner one evening, and as we walked out to our seats on the patio I commented, "That's a nice bag you've got there, did your boyfriend pick it out for you?" He replied, "It's the easiest way to carry a concealed MP5K around." He wasn't kidding.

I never looked at dudes with messenger bags the same again.

Uh, since when is a messenger bag considered gay? Maybe if the strap is like 12" long and it becomes a glorified purse.

I actually laugh in my head when I see suits with backpacks. Looks totally unprofessional. That is the place for messenger bags (I use one myself).

Shoulder bag > pockets. Shoulder bag > backpack unless I need to carry a crapton of stuff.
