I've told my wife that if women dressed and acted like men, that men wouldn't be attracted to them. No shaving legs or arm pits, no make up, guy hair styles, 10 year old underwear with holes in it, you know...

Survival.

I read that attraction to certain physical attributes is associated with survival. Beauty and youthfulness is associated with being healthy, thus she's likely to produce and more. But with modern fashions and fads, that association may not there any longer. Why was (perhaps stil is) Harrison Ford interested in Calista Flockhart is a good example.

How do you explain gay people then?

Not trying to troll, just wondering if there's a second sentence in that simplification. :p

The psychological theory is that we are attracted to indicese of reproductive success. In a more vulgar way, that boils down to "T&A". Psychologically we're subconsciously attracted to women who are more likely to survive childbirth (e.g. "birthing hips") and the ability to nurse the child.

At least, that's the current psychological theory (one of them anyway).

As far as being attracted to the girl's face, we're also genetically programmed to be averse to defects. A "prettier" face is one that has fewer "defects" and the person with that face is perceived as having superior genetics at least on a subconscious level.

Humans and dolphins are the only creatures where sex is actually more than just "something we do" naturally. We do it for pleasure, and I think with most humans at least, that pleasure is both physical and emotional.

I think it's becasue we want to reproduce, but we also want to have the best offspring possible. By finding a mate with admiriable qualities ( face/body/intelligence etc.. ) that would be able to pass those characteristics on to your offspring ( along with your own uber-characteristics ;) ) to create offspring which has the best of everything.
