If our instinct is to reproduce and have babies, why are we attracted to the person's face and other non-reproductive parts? Shouldn't it be just about "doing it" without any foreplay or anything like that?

I don't think our instinct is to reproduce and have babies. Who fed you that line? Your science teacher? I hear more people talking about how to *avoid* pregnancy as a result of sex instead of figuring out how to make it happen.

I think you're trying to use reason to explain what you've already assumed is merely a human version of animal instincts. But this is counter-productive and anti-intuitive as reason is not an animalistic tendency.

That said, I think it's because they have boobies.

Every animal around (including us) is basically designed to further its own species. We've evolved over millions of years to make reproduction the most likely. If we hadn't, we would have turned into another dodo and not be around anymore. The avoiding of pregnancy is a social thing. Instincts are odd in that they can be overridden sometimes by societal influences. Prevention of pregnancy is one of those influences. Over time certain cultures develop certain values and biases that assimilate into their people, and in effect, instincts are somewhat modified, but they're never completely gotten rid of.
 
I read something in a social psych textbook about how facial symmetry (which is perceived as beautiful) correlates highly with dominant genes. The more symmetrical the face the less likely that person is going to pass recessive genes. Same thing with body type - there is a certain ratio in the hips (I forgot what) that men find most attractive, and also correlates with fertility. BTW this works with both men and women - there is a certain torso ratio in men that is most attractive to women, suggesting fitness

Since things like medical science and birth control have changed things, these factors aren't as crucial but are still important.

Survival of the race, and maybe pheromone have something to do with it.

I remember when I was 5 years old and if I were watching an action movie I would really enjoy looking at the hot chicks. I don't remember much of what was going on before I was 5, but I know I had no seen much if any of society's pressure. I'm quite certain society is not at the root of my desires.

Mostly they just become subconcious cues which can be overridden. I think the hip ratio that the scientists discovered was 0.7 or something like that.
