The IP trick does work regardless of what you do connect it to or don't connect it to. Since the NIC is in a slot, windows want's to find a network home and wastes time seeking.
Try different IRQ arrangements to see if two devices are not conflicting but not exactly getting along. The SB Live is ideal if isolated as most people know.
Delete or rename drvwppt.vxd and drvw117.vxd virtual tape device drivers. You will notice that that pause, as you hit the desktop, will dissapear.
Use a registry cleaner or manually clean out any garbage. I use Norton utilities, and two version of Regclean (The new one makes me wonder what the hell it is doing because it only says "fix errors". The old one lets me pick and delete the garbage).
Disable the floppy seek in bios and under the performance tab in device manager.
Don't use "auto" for drives etc in the bios. It wastes time detecting. Assign the hardware.
I was getting a 2 minute boot but now I am at about 35 seconds. The new Promise ata100 drivers and bios (Asus only of course) helped considerably as did the above mentioned tips.
Can someone explain to me why you would need a cd-rom readable DVD drive, a cd-rom readable CDRW, and a CD-ROM? Dump the CD-rom...no?
