my windows 98se load times are way too long. i have my hard drive running off the hpt 370 ata100 controller on my abit kt7. anyone else have this problem??? it takes FOREVER

Yes, I have an ATA100 controller card for my 75GXP and it takes a while to boot to win98se. I'm not sure why though. I just flip it on and go grab a beer or whatever and when I come back, its up. Sorry, I'm not a lot of help, but your not alone.

well you know what they say, misery loves company......i do the same thing allthough i'm not 21....ha ha...don't tell anyone....🙂

Hmm, may I ask how long forever is? 🙂 I know Windows 98 does take a lot longer to boot than Winme. (if for some reason you are comparing them)

I have a 900@ 1ghz and 7200 drive, and it takes about 50 seconds to completly load windows.

it's the ata100 controller I heard it's like a scsci device(needs to figure out what's atached to it before boot is to continue)

i'd have to say that it takes a good 2 mins from post to desktop. there's a period of about 1 min where there's like no disk activity at all and i'm staring at a black screen with some startup commands........
how do you give your nic a static IP????

<< how do you give your nic a static IP???? >>

Go to Control Panel-->Networks:

then go to the properties of the TCP/IP ->(name of yer nic card). Go to the 'IP Address' tab and click on 'specify an IP address'. Then put '10.0.0.10' for 'IP Address' and '255.255.255.0' as your Subnet Mask. Click apply and reboot. On the second PC do the same, except make the IP finish with '20'. (etc etc for however many you have on the LAN)

I would try connecting your drive to the IDE controller. I noticed very long load times for Unreal Tournament when my hard drive was on the Highpoint controller. I switched it to the IDE controller and the problem dissolved instantly (like a warm snowflake, arggh its snowing now). I disabled the raid controller since I wasn't using raid anyway. Give it a try!

about the IP binding, i use the nic as part of a school network not a home network so id on't think that will work. i originally tried using it on the ide channel provided by the south bridge but i was having alot of problems with the stability, it would keep freezing when i tried to do disk intensive things like installing a game or defraging and then when it went to post it wouldn't detect the hdd. when i moved the hdd to the hpt370 i haven't had any of those problems, it's just takes awhile to load....any ideas as to what could have been the problem, could it have been with my board or my drive?

My computer never breaks 20seconds on the bootup......
All programs are running and it's completely done booting by 40.

Do you have any IRQ or USB conflicts? Either of these can cause the system to hang. Also the SB Live! can cause the system to hang.

Check here under sound cards.

i tried all that stuff already, it seems wierd to me that it only freezes when the hdd is a slave on the via's 686 ide channels, but when it freezes, i don't even get mouse activity, i mean it completely freezes....

The IP trick does work regardless of what you do connect it to or don't connect it to. Since the NIC is in a slot, windows want's to find a network home and wastes time seeking.

Try different IRQ arrangements to see if two devices are not conflicting but not exactly getting along. The SB Live is ideal if isolated as most people know.

Delete or rename drvwppt.vxd and drvw117.vxd virtual tape device drivers. You will notice that that pause, as you hit the desktop, will dissapear.

Use a registry cleaner or manually clean out any garbage. I use Norton utilities, and two version of Regclean (The new one makes me wonder what the hell it is doing because it only says "fix errors". The old one lets me pick and delete the garbage).

Disable the floppy seek in bios and under the performance tab in device manager.

Don't use "auto" for drives etc in the bios. It wastes time detecting. Assign the hardware.

I was getting a 2 minute boot but now I am at about 35 seconds. The new Promise ata100 drivers and bios (Asus only of course) helped considerably as did the above mentioned tips.

Can someone explain to me why you would need a cd-rom readable DVD drive, a cd-rom readable CDRW, and a CD-ROM? Dump the CD-rom...no?

i was thinking about that......but i like having all three drives, my dvd is only 40x and my cdrom is 40, the difference is nice when i'm burning to have that extra speed...i will try some of those ticks....thanx
