why are coach purses so expensive

When I went to Paris with a lady friend years ago and saw the prices of the Hermes, LV, and Chanel bags... lets just say Coach didn't seem all that bad.

I also noticed that most of the purchasers were Japanese, this one Japanese lady bought a 30K bag at Hermes and I later saw her buying another bag at LV. (The stores even had workers who were Japanese).

coach knocks off ftw

Yeh. My wife has what feels like a closet full of knockoff purses. D&G, Kate Spade, Coach, Prada, ect. Didn't pay more than $20-$50 for each of them...which still seems like a lot of money...but at least it's not $300-$1500 a piece.

They all look like exactly the real thing. In fact the Coach might even be the real deal, just second hand runs of them. My aunt used to go to some fairly shady places in Brooklyn and bring home garbage bags full of these things and sell them at "purse parties".

I guess that market is really getting cracked down and she doesn't resell anymore.

canal street has so many knock offs its ridiculous. you're funding terrorism buying them, though :sneaky:

Last I read Japan still accounts for almost 70% of luxury good purchases.

I didn't say this problem is exclusive to America. You'll notice that Japan's economy lately hasn't exactly been something to envy. America is likely to have at least one lost decade just like Japan. Of course it's easier and more convenient to blame the banks than to blame people's ceaseless desire to own things they can't afford. At the end of the day the banks are just the enablers.

That's exactly where I buy mine, at "purse parties". Like you said, they might be the real deal. The last guy who was supplying a friend of mine with the purses for the "purse party" she was planning to have didn't come through with the goods so the party was canceled. I was told he was arrested. 😱

My wife and youngest daughter compete to see who gets one each month. Then they brag to the other females in the family.

Lucky that there is a outlet mall with a Coach store nearby. about 50% of the cost.

But that also means they think they can justifiy getting twice as many 🙁

My sister wanted a Michael Kors bag that was $300.. relatively cheap to some other brands, but still.. $300 for a bag? Good thing her birthday is 2 days after Christmas so I just combine the two gifts into one.

Yeah and that's not even as expensive as most of Michael Kors bags. I've been into one of their stores in Chicago before and they had bags in there which were $1,500+.

My wife loves purses and handbags like most other women. I've bought her a variety of bags...I don't go and blow paychecks on them, but she loves them and it works to my benefit to give her what she likes. A few that I've bought her include a Coach work/laptop bag (its intended purpose is as a diaper bag, but it works perfect as a good sized work bag for her), Louis Vuitton wallet, Prada clutch, and a Kate Spade purse. All of them with the exception of the clutch from Prada were for her birthday or Christmas. Normally she just goes to the Coach outlet and gets stuff that's like 75% markdown.

Simple answer: Women are crazy for purses and shoes. It is dumb, but somehow it is important enough that they will spend all that money on crap even if they have a ton of it already.

And in my wife's defense, she really doesn't spend money on other stuff. She doesn't have a garage full of tools, a high end computer, Xbox & games, really care about a big screen TV or even want a nice car or expensive jewelry.

But she likes purses and shoes.

Coach is a starter brand. It's relatively cheap so females start with this before moving to the really expensive brands. Next up is Burberry. Still not bad and relatively cheap. But then they graduate to expensive brands costing thousands. Good luck.

I'm extremely happy with my new-ish $25 canvas shoulder bag...

Not going to judge since I would happily blow $500+ on a very nice jacket, $300 on designer sunglasses, etc.

Never saw the value in getting $600 SLI video cards and top of the line CPUs though.

A higher end video card delivers practical improvements over a cheaper one.

A more expensive handbag. . . does what exactly?

practical improvements only go so far

you could also argue that handbags have a longer lifespan than video cards.

A more expensive handbag has a longer lifespan than a cheaper one of equal quality?

This is my argument:

Normal price videocard ---> Expensive videocard = Improved game performance and video quality

Cheap speakers ---> Expensive speakers = Much better sound quality

Normal price handbag ---> Expensive handbag = Nothing

A better comparison to the handbag would be this:
Say there was some hypothetical branding of videocards that increased their cost 10 times over. A normal GTX 460 is $150. A GTX 460 with the special brand is $1500. The card with the special brand offers no improvements. Its the same exact thing, just with the special branding. Maybe different colors, heatsink, etc. Who in their right mind would buy it?

Or how about those $600 HDMI cables? Maybe we should buy those over cheap ones because of the brand LOL.

Well then what are we arguing about? Guys will waste their money on video cards and games and girls will waste their money on expensive handbags.

In the grand scheme of things both are an equal waste of money.

Footnote
Over the course of say a decade, expensive handbags hold their value much better than expensive video cards.

Strokes the ego, provides a higher sense of self-worth, more ego boost, envy of the "bitches" that can't afford it (more likely don't have a high enough credit limit or big enough sugar daddy). Can also "impress" a large number of people in public.

Bag could go out of fashion, but give it enough time, it'll be "vintage". Or start your own style/trend.

Video card goes "obsolete" the second you put it in your machine, loses most of its value within a year. Aside from maybe a few nerds on anonymous forums and your nerd friends (not many?), no one cares, it sits inside an enclosed case. In 20 years, I guess some kid in China will melt it down in an open fire for $2?

Will a high end video card get you laid?

As much as men like to think there's some hierarchical pecking order of alpha males...we ain't got shit on women. Women have some sort of dichotomy of acceptance and value that us males will never fully comprehend. We aren't high on estrogen.

I'm not arguing over whether or not videocards and handbags are a waste of money. I am arguing on whether or not purchasing a more expensive version of each is a waste of money when compared to purchasing the cheaper version.

Expensive bags retaining and/or gaining more value over their cheaper counterparts is an advantage I can agree with, but I don't think most are purchased as a form of investment.

No arguments here

FWIW though Coach =/= expensive.

High end bag can get you out of the doghouse. Buy something like Chanel bag and have it delivered to your female partner. Instant exit from the doghouse and guaranteed sex.

they should start making purses out of the skin of fat people. Since fat people don't do anything, their skin is soft, and perfect for use in fine clothing and accessories. All that needs to be done is a good an thorough cleaning to get the grease and stench off, and you'll have a fine product for sure. Everyone knows this.
