A better solution would be to revoke that little pos drivers license until 18.

Like being over 18 makes people great drivers.

How about actually making hard road tests and giving rigorous training in the operation of a motor vehicle.
yeah, the test was pretty damn easy from what I remember.

I'm not sure how much of a fix it would be , but I'm sure this idea would help:

Have a teir system for licensing.. when you first get your license at 16, you can only operate a car/truck with less than 150 hp..
18 years of age, you can be bumped up to operating cars/trucks up to 199hp, but only after meeting a 2000 mile experience mark..
At 21 years of age, limits are ceased, but only after lets say.. you've reached 5000 miles experience..

How about doing something much more useful and safety conscious? Like giving tickets for reading/doing your make up/talking on the phone while driving. And stiffer penalties for DUI's. Or how about getting W's fvck nut oil buddies to stop bullying the auto industry and EPA and mandate safer, more efficient cars and fuels.

Speed limits are the least of our worries.

Yea thats what they do with bikes over here, i think its a good idea, at 16 you are only allowed to ride scooters, when ur 17 u can go upto 125cc then at 18 you can ride 600cc and at 21 1000cc, im not sure they have the miles limits though, if they implemented them i'd say instead of 2000 miles make it 10,000 and instead of 5000 make it 18,000 or so

Plus, what if a person takes their car to a racetrack?

Finally, you can usually get around speed limiters fairly easily.

for those that want to go on a racetrack, then those people can mod their cars, no?

just like 1% of people who overclock their pc's

Forget it. No one here is going to agree with you (except for me). I have seen what happens to a family member when their car gets impacted by a car going 100 mph (they die, that's what happens). The other driver suffered a blowout, it was not his fault and he was driving in a straight line, but hit an object on the road and blew out the tire. The cops said nobody can control a vehicle at that speed with a blown out tire. It becomes exponentially more difficult to control a vehicle in an emergency situation as speed increases.

But hey, let's not step on anyone's fsking freedom, right?

QFT. They already do that to cars that are governed to 150mph.

On a more practical note it's just not realistic. First, you'd have to sell cars based on state. Then what would you do if you wanted to buy a car out of state? Or what would happen if laws were changed and upped the speed limit or lowered it? Would you have to take your car into service to reprogram it? And for that matter that's only applicable to cars with auto transmissions, what would you do with manual ones? Not to mention the fact that I don't want govt controlling every little aspect of my life. A better solution would be to revoke that little pos drivers license until 18.

and require drivers tests every so many years. i can't believe that you can get a license at 16 and keep it forever (unless you break some laws, etc).

I have legally driven 90MPH. :)

Just because you can't legally do something on public roads doesn't mean that you should outlaw anything being able to do it anywhere. Afterall, why not start limiting cars to say, 150HP, since that's all you really need?

I think it's a great idea! People would have the choice between a new car limited to 85mph or a used car without the rediculous limit. The value of my cars will be going up.

It would have to operate at under 18 (not go up to 21). Also, this would mean that a person is FORCED to purchase multiple cars in a short period of time, and also that you would likely be unable to drive your parents car, so not owning a car would not be an option.

Moronic idea.

What if your wife is in labor and you have to get to the hospital STAT? Do you really want to be limited to 65mph?

I bet you think more Federal regulation is the solution to all our problems.

Common sense dictates that some regulation is necesary. The only question is what limits are appropriate? The OP was posing a legitimate question for debate.

Really? So, who would be forcing a "just turned 18 year old" to purchase another car?
In addition, a majority of under 18 yr olds don't purchase their own vehicle anyway.. mommy or daddy goes out and buys it for them.. so, if they are well off, then mommy and/or daddy can purchase their first vehicle as an "under 150hp" vehicle. A 16 year old does not need or have a need for 200+ horsepower. Also, driving is a privilage, not a RIGHT.
There is this road up around where I live where at least 4-5 times a year, some teenager is killed. This is no lie, but everytime its excessive speeds (80+ or more; speed limit on this road is 40 and its a windy road). The last time, it was some 17 yr old punk with three friends in his brand new spunky all wheel drive BMW out on this road showing his @$$. Two died, the other two critically injured.

Law and Order must be observed. If you can find a place where I have said otherwise I would LOVE to see it.

If common sense was observed by the OP - there would have been no post.

Back in high school, I did my senior project on automotive safety. I discovered that 40,000+ people die each year in car accidents. One of the solutions for reducing the number of deaths was as simple as limiting all road speeds to 20mph max. It sounds slow, but it would have eliminated something like 94% of car-related fatalities. 37,600 people's lives could be saved every year if we just drove slower, but nobody wants to do that.

WORST IDEA EVER. Driver error, human error, whatever you want to call it, is the reason for the majority car accidents. Not because the car can go 180, and has AWD. It's the drivers fvcking up.

lol I love how the question is whether or not cars should have some limitation as to capable speed and the majority of you respond with the reasons why there should be no speed limits. Back in reality, we do have speed limits, and they're not going to disappear due to the collective wisdom of ATOT.

Absolutely - and it's not the Government's job to fix stupid.

PERSONAL responsibility is what will fix automotive deaths, not cars limited to a certain speed.

People die on tractors every year that go 10 mph - maybe we should limit them to 5 mph!
