Why are Apple products always hyped?

I'm on a Core Duo Mac right now- build quality seems nice and the styling is better than any pc notebook.
But I'd rather be on either one of my 2 old pc's now- one is a 7yr old P4 and the other a 5yr old Athlon XP, both loaded with WinXP.
Damn NF2 mobo (bad AGP port or memory) and the P4 hd is an 8yr old 30gb maxtor which is getting chkdsk boot errors.

The company embraced gapless playback... what, 3-4 decades after the concept was introduced to the world of music, and well after other manufacturers & developers.

They renamed the mp3 (a ~15 year old file format) the "podcast" and pat themselves on the back for being innovative...

I read an Iphone review where the reviewer dedicated an entire paragraph to praising the design and quality of the styrofoam the product was packaged in.

There are a lot of stupid people out there, and they have a lot of money. Marketing which exploits this by selling an image is the future of business.

no one claims it was first. just as the macintosh wasn't the first gui. they do however bring it first to market in a user friendly manner that is accessible to everyone, not just the geeks that knew how to download gapless playback plugins. and frankly not many players had that feature anyways. and its never one feature, its the ease of use and full integration with software and the small touches that make the device easy to use. such as with podcasting integration and automated management with itunes. simple things like pausing when you yank your cord out of its socket

the problem is some geeks think what they care about is what everyone does or should...which why such geek run companies got trampled by apple over and over

as for stupid people and money. so smart people are poor?

Umm my Sony m600i has a fully functional web browser (with tabbed browsing), a 2.5" touch screen, awesome e-mail support out of the box and great organiser capabilities, a memory stick duo spot for added storage (albeit the onboard sound processing isn't that great) and a full qwerty keyboard that allows me to type nearly as fast on my computer (and I am a fast typer).

All this for $0 for 2 years with minimum spend $20 and a cap at $29 ($120 in value) + 10mb free net usage each week. And this phone was released in 2006. The iPhone is a piece of overpriced overmarketed crap.

Fair enough. I just can't help but think most of the vehement haters either haven't used any of their products or are so biased against Apple they automatically discredit everything from them. I'm not going to claim iPhone is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but an impartial person should be able to realize that it has some great features, and some shortcomings as well.

I'll agree that most Apple products are kind of overpriced for what you get. That's why I've never bought a new Apple product. Picked up a few refurb iPods from the Apple store for myself and friends/family. Prices are much more competitive with other players on the market, and they ship out in like-new condition.

Wait, wait. We're all forgetting a couple things:

1. Sale of Apple products = competition for PC/Windows. It's a good thing.

2. "It just works!" is geared towards stupid people, which there are a lot of. A lot. We always have threads on stupid people (the guy who called ISP/ sales vs tech guy flash).

3. They make great gifts to the non-tech savvy. You'd rather give someone a generic MP3 player than an iPod ?

4. Aesthetically, they are the best. This adds to #3, and it makes people feel better about owning a Mac product.



Who gives a crap, eh? Let's agree not to bash a mac user until they say something out of place like "It's better than PC" or "my computer is better."

It's the iPhone minus the phone. Same browser, same applications, same music player. If you've use a Touch, you have a good idea of how the iPhone works.

I'm not an Apple fan by any stretch of the imagination however you have to give Apple credit, when they do something for the most part they get it right and generally on the first try. That said I think Apple for the most part makes relatively normal products but makes them look very stylish and markets heavily (often with help from the media) to make the products seem very special. Before people say I haven't used an Apple product, I used a Macbook for 2 years and didn't see any advantages to it over any other laptop and I've spent a fair amount of time with the iPod Touch which I thought was a very slick device but again didn't offer much that was particularity special (or worthy of all the attention its getting).

But the thing is I've got a Sony m600 for nearly a year now, and they updated the firmware which has made it bug-free for me. Only a few freezes in a year.

iPod Clickwheel = Actually improves usability. Other than the battery thing, iPods aren't exactly horrible. Plus, if you take care of the li-ion battery it'll last long enough. My phone actually has a d-pad that has the standard 4 directions you can push, then you can actually spin the whole pad and use it to scroll up and down. Kinda like 1/2G iPod's mechanical wheel, except the four buttons are also part of it.
Multitouch = Can have fun fucking itself. Tactile response FTW, typos FTL.

And cut the "usable browser" stuff out. I actually prefer Opera on my BJ2 to Safari on the iPhone. And yes, I've used one extensively. I think I'm going to get an HTC Touch Pro or Sony Xperia X1 when either comes out, depending on which one gets stuck with outrageous pricing.

I have. On the contrary, it was apple's silly wheel thing I could never get used to. I prefer the buttons on my zune. Easier to do by feel when driving. I mean, you move your finger and that's how many songs skipped? WHo knows? I click right 5 times on the zune's circular buttons and that's 5 songs skipped.

I was a skeptic as well but after playing with my friends iPhone (1st and 2nd gen) - I believe it's the best phone out there today. There are so many useful applications and browsing the web is a lot simpler than compared to the Blackberry. Not having a QWERTY was a bit difficult, however. I did hear that Blackberry is releasing a touch screen with tactile feedback - that'd be sweeeeeet.
