You're totally missing the point you techno dweeb.

It's not $5000 for a phone with wacked out Microsoft Exchange support, it's <$500 for a cool accessory that gives you a cell phone, address book, calendar, iTunes, vids, a FUNCTIONAL mobile browser and games that is thin and cool looking and is practical for everyday use.

$500 is not something just rich folks can afford.

bingo, with tons of apps and enterprise features it now justifies its price. its the whole package, not just a nit pick feature here or there some people concentrate on.

as for affordability. ever look at the price of high end video cards recently? and what does that do? play games;)

I can get the same thing in my PPC smartphone that I bought 2 years before iPhone came out. The main difference is the itunes part, though I listen to music every now and then. Not sure about newer smartphones but the battery life sucks on my PPC 6700. My PPC 6700 set me back $299 in 2005 and it has an SD slot for upgrading.

I don't know what that is but Fine. You're not my friend and I'll tell my friends that you don't have an iPhone so they won't be your friends either. Suddenly, $299 is a lot of money wasted.

More than adequate technology for consumers, great aesthetics and an affordable price. What's not to like about it?

Most apple products are not at an affordable price for what you get.

Now that they've reduced the price, there's really nothing else out there that can compete in the younger consumer market.

You're right. It's the person who is stuggling to feed his family and complains non-stop about how expensive gas is who is able to afford an apple product.

It's funny. Gas goes up and everyone complains about how they can no longer afford to buy food anymore. But Apple comes out with a new fancy gadget and charges an arm and a leg for it and suddenly, POOF! The money is flowing in and we GOTTA get that phone.

Heh. Although not entirely true, it's still valid in my experience as most Mac users I know are pretty freakin poor - they scrape the floor to buy the hardware and never pay a dime for anything else.

The iPhone is slightly different in that it's now <$300 and costs less than many other cell phones.

At work, people are bugging help desk about replacing their Curves with the iPhone since it supposedly fully supports Activesync. "Too bad it doesn't run Bloomberg" is IT's kill response but there are many other reasons why it's not supported and disallowed in the network.

Our CIO sent out an e-mail last week saying that if you are eligible for a corporate phone, you can upgrade to a 3g iPhone. Everyone in the office went nuts because the majority of them are sales and cell phone eligible.

No experience with an iPhone, but I've played around with a friend's Touch and absolutely love it. Simple and easy to use, fantastic web browser. Windows Mobile 6 just sucks, I don't know how anybody can claim otherwise unless bias against Apple is clouding their judgment. ;)

There's a lot of stuff I don't like about Apple and crowd they tend to cater to, but I have to admit they come out with some pretty neat and innovative products.

It's because some people have more dollars than sense!!! ;)

These are the same people that have little embroidered animals on their shirts, ya know??

It's like a guy I knew, years ago. I'd see him in the mall, carrying something he purchased in a Macy's bag. I'd ask him what sort of deal he scored, he'd show me something (shirt, whatever), and proudly tell me he bought it at Macy's for XX dollars. I'd smile, and tell him I saw the exact same shirt over at Penney's, for half that price.

His response? "Yeah, but I got this at MACY'S!!"

Have you ever used one? They are REALLY cool- the interface is amazing.

That said, Steve Job's marketing machine is probably one of the best in history.

No no... apple is like a pair of $200 jeans. If you make it and market it even idiots will buy them and think girls like them cause they wear $200 jeans. ;)

I would buy Apple products if it's not my money. That's why we use Apple computers at work.

they also tend to be easier to use and thus more popular with non-techy people. or at least, that's the image they are trying to project and it seems to be working. great marketing.

im gonna go with marketing, then styling. they market everything. ive seen Air commercials, never one for an X300, on tv. Ive seen Ipod commercials, but I cant recall seeing one for other mp3 players (and Ive had 2 sansa players and 2 creative players).

ive even gotten where if someone asks if my zen is an ipod i just say yes, im tired of explaining what i mean when i say no.

Heh... using that logic, did anyone see CasioTech in line in front of an Apple store yesterday? :)

People get excited about stuff...

I remember seeing long lines for the PS3 and XB360. When I was young I remember lines for Cabbage Patch Kids... err whatever.

I really don't get why so many people on this board are so down on Apple. They make products that appeal to the masses. Sure most people probably don't even know that there are other MP3 players besides the iPod, but they aren't geeks like most of us either. Apple doesn't go crazy with the marketing, but they do make some very memorable TV spots. Apple has always done this ever since it's first mac commercial in 1984. I guess its cool to go against the gain sometimes.

I don't get it I guess...keep the Apple hate going:thumbsup:

Typical Apple user: "Because, man, it just works! :) :) :) "

Got to admit, though. Apple makes the best looking products.

The company embraced gapless playback... what, 3-4 decades after the concept was introduced to the world of music, and well after other manufacturers & developers.

They renamed the mp3 (a ~15 year old file format) the "podcast" and pat themselves on the back for being innovative...

I read an Iphone review where the reviewer dedicated an entire paragraph to praising the design and quality of the styrofoam the product was packaged in.

There are a lot of stupid people out there, and they have a lot of money. Marketing which exploits this by selling an image is the future of business.

It's shiny. People like shiny things. I actually had to exorcise this out of my sister, who was fascinated by the way an iBook glowed "like it was alive" during sleep mode.

I also showed her the superiority of my Creative Zen over her iPod video that I got for $75 cheaper. Expansion slot + FM tuner + Flash memory + more versatile interface + smaller size + WAY better screen = win.

I don't think Apple created the term podcast, nor do they claim to have been innovated by creating the technology behind podcasts. Furthermore, podcast and mp3 are not synonymous.

because they work, and in many instances (such as the 3G iphone), are actually good value, offer a very simple user-interface with pretty much no learning curve to speak of, are nicely-designed and well-made.
