woot - yes i did...but as i said, its a stock dell psu 300W (i believe) powering a dell 4600....2 HDS, 2 opticals, audigy2 plat pro.

stas - i will pay attention to the barrel thing but how do i know its not my internet connection that is acting up when that happens?

purdue - why do people use vsync? sorry, i just still don't undertstand what it is really. isn't it that what a screen image changes, it "refreshes"?

and i'm running it at 1024x768...everything maxed..

1. 300W is on the border for that system. Sure, it could maybe handle it, but PSUs on the edge die fast.

2. Shoot the barrel once for it to cache, then shoot it 5 more times in the following rounds. If it laggs, definately your CPu as your internet wouldn't act up all 5 times. Also, give us your 3dMark03 compare link. I want too see your avg fps in the "Ragtroll" test.

3. Certain games aren't meant to be run over a certain amout of fps. For example, even if your video card can do 100 fps, while and your screen is refreshing at 60Hz, the image will sometimes "tear" meaning a rip in the textures of the game. Vsync is to sync your fps with your refresh rate so tearing doesnt happen.

With your video card you should be able to run HL2/Source at 1600x1200 everything max. I can on my OCed 6800 GT.

hey monster,

thanks for that. i'm worried about my PSU now that you made that comment - i do have a brand new superflower 550W. should i just install that? reason why i haven't is cuz its loud...

about vsync - so it is wise to always have vsync on then?

will publish link in a few hours...got to go to school now.

thanks for your help.

I was thinking it might be the problem with Smartgart where you lose the AGP texture acceleration, xiaobao12. DXDIAG would have told you that, though.

vsync is useful in sports, racing, rts, rpg and adventure (like prince of persia) games

in fps it isn't that useful generally

no it makes the max 60 FPS, I wouldn't recommend it unless you can't stand a little image tearing here and there.

VSync synchronises the FPS rate with the refresh rate to avoid image tearing.

It will limit the FPS rate to 60fps if the refresh rate is 60Hz. 85FPS for 85Hz, etc.
