Why A High Quality PSU Is An Essential Purchase

Stop me if you have heard this one before. A couple of our guys were doing some load testing one day on some PSUs and had some fun with some "inexpensive" low end units.

The unit was rated at +3.3V@28A,+5V@34A,+12V@21A

We tested it with the 12V at 18A, the 3.3V at 20A, and the 5V at 10A on our load testers.

Pros: Ive had this fan for almost 2 years. It runs almost exactly at the wattage it says it does. In many cases this psu is better than many 600 watt cheaper alternatives. THE PRICE IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Cons: Not really a con but. After 16 fans a 8800gts, physics card, dual core, 2 hard drives and dvdrw drive... it just says no. Sadly this little power supply seemed like david vs golaith... and lost... NOT THE POWER SUPPLYS FAULT. and it did put up with a LOT before the 8800 but afterwards... the poor little psu cried bloody murder...

Other Thoughts: GET THis if your building a low to medium build. it can support the equivilant of 3 hard drives a 8600 a sound card and perhaps one more goody. AND it lasts for EVER!!!

Actually this review was quite believable.

Yes, because at that low efficiency a Kill-A-Watt will report 450W when his computer is really drawing 185W.

It's sad that so many companies get away with falsely advertising their power supplies.

I learned many years ago when a cheapy 300 watt PS blew up when I should have been under 175 watts of load. Since then I've usually gone with Enermax or Antec. In the last couple of years, PC Power and Cooling, Seasonic, and Corsair have all been added to my short list. Last PS I bought was a PC Power and Cooling (just last week actually), thus far It's been a worthy replacement for my Aging 431 watt Enermax that I'd been using since the kt133/Duron era. (enermax still works, just thought that with 5 hard drives, a socket 939 dual core, and my new 4850, it was time to get a more energy efficient power supply and one that wouldn't be taxed.)

On a more serious note, this makes me fear for my Thermaltake 430W units. They only have 18A on the 12V rail. Still, they run fine for what I've got on em, E2140 @ 3.2Ghz, Radeon X1950Pro, DVD, HD.
