Trust me, our guys had fun making that video. And, it's nice to see the well informed PSU crowd here at AT enjoying this little clip for what it was.

"We've got to save Yellowbeard!" [ rubbing two craptacular PSUs together ] "Clear!" [ bzzzzzt ]

Very enjoyable video indeed, even though you are the competition. ;)

LOL...yeah, but competition is a GOOD thing! And, we all of course realize that the basic premise behind this applies to all of us. Friends don't let friends use cheepy PSUs!

Just one question from the ethics dept. - did you contact the mfg of that particular PSU, and let them know of your findings. Perhaps (and this is just a hypothetical), they are unaware of that particular failure mode of their PSUs. It did seem like the 3.3v was loaded kind of heavily (although within specs).

Why should they do their competitors a favor by pointing out defects in their products? They didn't give the name of the competitor so I wouldn't say it is unfair that they published this video. Although I am quite sure Raidmax knows this PSU is a POS and is still putting it out there on the market.

Besides this PSU failed on the Primary side, I am no PSU expert, but I would think that if this were a problem of a rail getting overloaded and the OCP or OVP not doing their jobs then the PSU would fail somewhere on the secondary side.

I agree, I'm pretty certain these manufacturers have an exact accounting of all the crap parts that are put into these so called psu's. What amazes me more is that they actually slap a safety label on them. The least they could do is supply an extra large ground wire.

This is one of the reasons I just went ahead with my idea to construct a 24VDC input ATX supply.
Its been running a week now, input is from deep cycle marine batteries. I wanted to cut out the DC > AC > DC conversion needed to run a pc when the power was out. Really proud how well it worked out, 12V outputs stay within 11.99V to 12.01V ,5V never moves from 5.00V, much better than my AC powered supplies :)

well a SMPS takes AC power turns it into DC power...then chops it up into high frequency AC power and then rectifies it back to DC again

My 12V section is voltage divider > linear regulator. The 3.3V and 5V are buck converters with precision sources. I'm using a pic 16f88 to monitor the whole thing.

If you look at the end when he aims the camera at the ground, there is a cooler master box :/

Coolermaster Stacker 830 nVidia Edtion...used for a show case at show events....so says Yellowbeard.

Thanks for clarifying that. If anyone else is curious, it is NOT a Coolermaster PSU.
