Whose going to make the next gen MMO?

WoW is great...but like most MMO's, it WILL run it's course of popularity.

I have not seen anything that will dominate the market any time soon. Warhammer was OK, but nearly not unique enough to pull me in, and AoC was a flop IMO.

Every time a new game comes out, I end up going back to WoW, not only because most of my buddies play it, but because it seems to have an enjoyable factor to it still.

I like hard grinds, I like not being able to get level capped within months, I would prefer to hit a level cap in 500+ hours of playing...I love the grind, makes things worth getting.

Are there game titles I am missing in the next few months here?

I am anticipating Priston Tale 2 if anything ^_^.

They have Diablo 3, which will hold me for a few months, but that is not a 'real' MMO...SC2 is definitely not an MMO....unless they have something comming out that we do not know of, I do not think Blizzard will make the next 'big' MMO.

Lately, Blizzard is banking on games that are popular, and I do not think they feel the need to make something innovative/new, when they have such big cashcow names like startcraft, Diablo, and WoW titles.

The only MMO that will take a noticeable market share from WoW is Blizzard's next MMO. Period.

I'd say the MMO most likely to gain any market share would probably be Bioware's upcoming KOTOR MMO. Bioware's one of the few companies with a track record of good games that can compare to Blizzard's and the Star Wars franchise is, well, the Star Wars franchise. It's also a sci-fi MMO instead of fantasy, so it'll be a good outlet for people sick and tired of orcs and elves.

The other upcoming MMO that looks promising is being done by Tim Caine of Carbine Games. Caine was the lead dev and programmer for the original Fallout series, then for Troika. So he's also responsible for Vampire: Bloodlines. He's one of the greats and I'm sure he learned a few important business lessons after Troika got screwed so badly by Activision. No idea about specifics, setting, or anything, but he's one of the very few designers I trust implicitly.

As a Troika alum update, apparently Leonard Boyarsky (the other lead for Fallout and VTMB) is now the lead world designer for Diablo 3. Good sign, I think.

It says end of 2010 on the wiki. I know thats like 2 years away (atleast) but I don't really see anything on the horizon before that, unfortunately.

I hear EQ3 is in the works as well, and who knows the quality of that product as EQ2 was probably a step in the wrong direction (mostly as far as gameplay went, but graphically it was superior), but other than those 2 games I don't see much on the horizon as far as good games.

I think 38 studios will be closer to what we'd envision in a next generation title. It's being made by original players and employees of Everquest, which was one of the best first generation titles which has hard raid content and long grinds. I think we'll see something closer to that experience than what will be released by newer companies.

Until then I think we'll just have to play what we've been playing. I went back to EQ1 because I wanted to support a game which has gameplay closer to what I wanted to play and support the company in which has a game like it. AOC was a flop but mainly because it was an easy boring grind. Not a hard challenging one where you actually felt like you were accomplishing something.

As far as a short term goes, I think we are out of luck.

The creators of EVE? MEH, that game is so bland IMO...you either fight little NPC pirates, are a pirate, or mine stuff....

Are you high? Go read about goonfleet. I don't play eve, but you have to admit it is the most ambitious mmo on the market. And it has survived for a longtime.

You can own parts of the game in EVE. You can own systems. No other mmo comes close.

Now if they made a land based mmo like eve, I would be all over it.

World of Darkness :D

Stray Bullet Games will make the next great MMO. I know some of the guys there, and they are making something I think will be the next WoW.

vampires and werewolves from what I just read. There is no info about actual game mechanics on the wiki. just lore from the paper rpg stuff.

pretty < game quality though...

I never found Entropia to be that great....I also never really understood it.

Also good art > good graphics engine.
