I barely justified an upgrade to a GTX 460 vid card. still completely satisfied with my E8400 @ 3.6ghz and 8 gigs of ram! i would get an SSD at this point if i upgrade anything at all (even then, i'd consider putting it on my laptop), but i got other things to waste my money on at this point.

I find that having nice displays and keyboard/ keep me satisfied with my machine as well. (dell U2410, 2007FP, MS ergo keyboard and logitech g500 w/ func pad)

jalaram, you could try a very simple BSEL mod to that Q6600. Ive successfully oc'd many Dell systems that way (Q6600s, E5200s, E6400)

I have an E5200 chip that I have overclocked to 3.5 ghz. I jumped on an I7 950/Gigabyte combo and I sold it within a few weeks here on AT in fact.
Speaking of which, I just got a hardware setup ready for Hackintoshing using a spare E5200 @ 3.9GHz w/4GB DDR3. Threw Win7 on it for stability testing and ran a few benchies - still a peppy little machine.

I've heard about that. I just have to go find a conductive pen, but not sure if the effort/risk is worth the benefit versus getting a new energy efficient platform.

I read somewhere about SetFSB. Any thoughts about that?

See if your clock generator is on the list: http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/ . It probably isn't, and the BSEL mod is a nice alternative. You can also adjust voltages via the ink as well.

Per the thread topic, I've had a 2600K and new mobo in my cart on several occasions and ended up closing it out simply because my CPU does everything I need it to atm.

You have a 750, great CPU...why in the world would you want to upgrade anyways.

Not justified IMO.

According to another site, the mb in the m8100y is the IPIBL-LA. Funnily enough, it is there.

CV190BPAG (ASUS IPIBL-LA[Berkeley])

Now, do I take a risk with the software since it says "For power users only". I am definitely an OC n00b.

Without changing any voltage settings, it's rather difficult to harm your PC, and especially permanently. I would read some basic OC guides (in your case, once that reference the first batch of Core 2 Duos/Quads) to get the gist of what's going on, how the different parts interact, and what it all means. Overall, it's relatively simple after you read through it .

I'm running at Q6600 at 3.51 and recently I upgraded a GTX 260 to a HD 6850 and received no performance boost in Rift. So I believe I am officially bottlenecked there. Other than that, everything else ran better.

It's weird because my chip is now getting really old (will be 4 years this July) and all I can say is that it sure doesn't feel like it... I'll probably wait for Ivy. One of those with a good ssd should feel like a nice step up from my Q6600 and 10k original 150gb raptor.

*raises hand*

I have a 1.5GHz Pentium M and a really crappy SSD in my laptop, and it runs about the same as my 3.4GHz Core2Quad with my 1TB 7200RPM drive for most things I use it for. Only thing I can do on my beast of a desktop is play HD videos and games. The rest feels pretty much identical.

Decided against upgrading. Going to wait for Ivy Bridge and Kepler in the Fall.

I sincerely doubt you will see Ivy bridge in the fall. Although I would not be surprised to see it in the Spring of Summer of next year.

Wow. This thread is exactly how I feel. I mean, I feel like others are posting my exact thoughts.

Isn't it funny how many of us have C2D or C2Q's that are overclocked and just see no real reason to spend the money to upgrade. Sure, the new CPU's are nice. It's always cool to see them crunching through the benchmarks. I think I can speak for many of us when I say that as I'm going through my gaming sessions or doing some of my daily tasks, thinking about how slow I'm getting work done or how crappy a game is performing is the last thing on my mind.

I'm on an overclocked C2Q 9550 @ 3.3ghz and a Radeon 4870. I just don't see a reason to upgrade at this time.

it's like the XP to Vista (or even 7) jump.
XP is working just dandy so why invest $100 for a new OS?

I'm still on a C2D E6300 that I bought right when the Core 2's came out. Still runs fine for video and web browsing...I'm tempted to buy a sandy bridge setup, but I'm not sure the benefits are worth $500. Also - I feel like an idiot for paying $169.99 for my Asus P5B vanilla motherboard at the Core 2 release....it's nothing special. I don't want to make the same mistake shelling out an extra 50 bucks for a basic board just because it's a newly released socket.

...but I've been making small upgrades here and there so all I have to do is drop in a new mobo/cpu/ram.

me, I'm still on an e8400 @ 3.6

I really want to get a new mobo/cpu/ram, but just don't need it... guess I'll wait another year and reassess

I've gone from E6700 > Q6600 > E8300 > Q6600 > i570.

I fell for the E8300. I wanted 4ghz on air. Then I switched back to a quad. Now I have the best of both (i5-750 @ 4.2). I'm staying put for the time being.

Because XP is 10 years old, has security problems, won't run DirectX 11, doesn't support TRIM, looks old and lacks many features of Windows 7? XP was good for its time, just like 98SE before it - but it is time to move on.

I just don't see how the comparison is valid. For some, the newer CPUs offer some absolutely dynamite features (support for RemoteFX being one of them) but for the majority of people the C2Q and generation 1 "i" products will be plenty.

I've decided to upgrade when the z68 comes out. I started buying parts already. To me it's not just a question of upgrading my cpu it's everything I get along with it. SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0, ESATA, UEFI etc.

I'm also going to take this opportunity to grab one of the new ssds probably a Vertex 3, and to upgrade to 64bit and 8 gigs of ram.

That sucks, I will never spend that much for a motherboard again since I do not need SLI/crossfire support.

^ I couldn't agree more. And part of the reason is this Intel chipset fiasco. Intel lost a big amount of chunk through the recall which could have been profit. Intel would want to get back some of those lost profit. If 2011 is indeed to come out this Q4 as planned then, it would cut them from profiting somehow on the fixed B3s where they just lost money. Business wise it will not be good for them.

I'm also waiting for Bulldozer even though I have a Sandy build already. But then again, AMD will be AMD (always playing catch up with Intel only to come up short).

Here's to hoping I am dead wrong about my assumption.

Ehhh, I upgraded from phenom to phenom 2 like a year and a half or so ago.... was a cheap upgrade too, like $120 to $150 .... It's not "very" fast, but it's plenty fast for what I need for now.... 4870 can handle whatever games I play just fine at 1920x1200

I may consider upgrading my video card and replacing my 24 and 19 inch monitor with 3x of the same size monitors and playing with eyefinity .... But, CPU isn't on the plate any time soon ....

The other thing holding me back from an upgrade is wanting a new mobo with UEFI which is not mainstream yet. For those of us with AMD i am not sure there is anything available with UEFI.

I still have my C2D E6000 running at stock speed and it's good enough for me. I had it OCed to 2.4GHz but I went back to stock because I didn't notice a difference. Gonna be a long time before I upgrade.
