LOL...I had a similar bad experience. I'd survived a few gravel cave ins but while mining a low redstone block on I learned a hard lesson about not mining what you're standing on as you never know what is beneath it. All my shit was incinerated along with me! Usually I huff it back to my death site and aside from some degraded armor quality I'm no worse for the wear. I generally only die from creepers so there's usually a huge crater filled with all my junk.

The creepers are surprisingly sneaky sometimes considering the AI in the game doesn't seem particularly complicated.

He didn't build it from scratch within Minecraft though.

He already had a 1yr project going on to "build a 1:1 scale model of the enterprise in Sketchup". Unfortunately, his harddrive crashed, lost 6 months of work, and only left with the framework. When Minecraft comes along, he said he "converted [his] already scaled plans into a format that minecraft could take and imported each deck in batch, leaving 4 spaces in between for walls."
Some poster mentioned that the way he did it was to "imported sketchup .PNG's into OMEN slice by slice".

Found a zombie spawner on the server the other night, and even tho I have monsters turned off, zombies kept popping out and coming at me. At one point I had like 8 zombies following me around, it was hilarious. Eventually I just dropped a few logs and set them on fire, so I got a few feathers out of it.

They must still be spawning tho, because when I'm in that area, I can still hear them groaning below me.

F Pig races.

Create a funnel to bring them into the Arena maze. Then we can Have REAL fun when dmg is turned on. It will be like a death labyrinth.

I found a Skeleton spawn point in my mine as well. The skeletons would walk up to me, then die and drop a couple arrows (don't know why, but that was what happened). I also got gunpowder from the chests next to the spawn (and enough string to make a bow, so I have a bow and arrows now).

I was dumb and destroyed the spawn point though. I should have kept it so that I had a source of arrows. I have 12 now, and no way of getting more.

Yeah, but since you can't kill chickens I don't have a way of getting feathers. Maybe I will try the trick of setting a fire around a bunch of chickens to see if I can get feathers if the fire kills them.

We'll just make a zombie tube.

We'll keep them penned up in a building and then send some poor saps running from them after they open the door. And through the maze!

haha, that's VERY far away, but yes. i've boarded them up for now but marked their location.

i'm sure one could be found closer by. and actually...a mod could just spawn one i think

They apparently just lie down and die when you come into contact with them. But still. If we can find something constructive for them to do. IE Maze of Death. IT would be great.
