Ok, why bother with this generation, with the new generation seemingly right around the corner? Another GPU slugfest looming and price drops on out-dated 7800/X1800 silicon is also bound to happen which would tell me to at least wait for that before buying either of those.
Next gen is around the corner?! Already???..... damn, the x1800's arent even that old.....
The X1800s were also 6 months late. They were
supposed to be out around May/June, with R580 hitting 6-9 months later. ATI says the problems with R520 production didn't affect R580's schedule, so the releases will be closer than normal.
There are supposed to be refresh parts (R580-"X1900"/G71-"GF7900") in the next 2-3 months, and (maybe?) true next-gen stuff (R600/G80) in the next 6-12 months. Very, very little solid info on R600/G80 yet, though, so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them.
If R580 roughly triples pixel shader performance over R520 like they're saying it might (16 pipes, 48 pixel shaders), it could be a beast... probably not a cheap one, though.
