Ok, why bother with this generation, with the new generation seemingly right around the corner? Another GPU slugfest looming and price drops on out-dated 7800/X1800 silicon is also bound to happen which would tell me to at least wait for that before buying either of those.

But where would you put your foot down, because after the G71 and R580 6 months down the road is the G80 and R600...

I would wait until the G80 and R600, my 7800GTX can last till then and beyond, and i should still be able to get some money back from it around that time to support the F80 or R600 buy.

My logic is to go after the New Gen cards rather than the refresh cards, so i at least get 1 years out of my new gen card.

Drayvn, I know, they've got us chasin our tales constatly :)

I think this next Gen will really by the true test of SLI/X-fire viability. We have already seen how well a single 512mb 7800GTX does against 2x6800U/GT's and I'm really thinking that the next gen will again show how crap silly 2x video cards are.

Yea the bastards!

Yea if the R600 and G80 are what they are cracked up to be being unified shaders and all, i cant see much of a chance of SLi or Xfire being up to much.

In terms of hardware and its limits could we even be able to be GPU limited when unified comes out, meaning there wouldnt be a point in having SLi or Xfire?

Just bought an eVGA which will allow me to step-up to a G71 when it comes out in the next few months. G80 and R600 are just too far out for me to worry about.

I personally see no reason (other than FEAR) not to skip the R580/G71 gen and wait for DX10. 7800 & X1800's are going to be capable cards until then.

Just having unified shaders won't magically make the cards faster -- it just makes it easier to load-balance between vertex and pixel shader operations (so it's easier to get closer to 100% utilization of the GPU). It's a good thing, but hardly the end-all of GPU design.

The problem with the waiting game is that you can easily wait forever. If you're looking to spend a bundle and keep the card/cards for 3-5 years, yeah, maybe you should wait at least for R580/G71 to see what they do (and if they drive down prices on other high-end cards). If you want to spend $200-300 and keep the card for a year or two, you should probably just buy a 7800GT or X1800XL now and be happy. :p

Is there any news for the next gen AGP video cards then? I'm gonna be getting the x850 XT AGP from the Microcenter deal but I wonder if I should wait for the next wave to come out.

I'm waiting on a whole bunch of new things, new CPU's, new OS, new SATA drives, so getting a new gen video card is just a bonus.

They say the G80 may be out by summer, so that might be a good time to build.

I'm guessing AGP Top-Teir is dead forever. Mid-range only for AGP.

I've comitted to a GPU upgrade per year (around this time) and a complete system overhaul every 2 years. So, Vista will get a whole new computer to bloat itself onto.

I am cheap, so I am going to wait for the new generation to be released and pick up a 7800GT for between $150 and $100.

FYI, you could be waiting a while. The 9700/9800Pro started around the same price as the 7800GT is now at (~$300-350), and it took two full card generations (almost 3 years) for those to get into the $100-150 price range.

Depending on where the Q1'06 cards come in (in terms of price and performance), 7800GTs could be closer to $200 in 6 months, though. Of course, if the new cards come in at $600+, it may not move current cards' prices down much.

Main problem isn't "then when WILL you actually buy the card?" I think the next-next gen (G80/R600) cards will be the ones to wait for, and everyone should actually just skip the 7900/X1900 (but the 7800 is still worth it, if you're considering a new computer right now). This is because G80/R600 has the actual silicon to run DirectX10. If anything, at least the new cards will RUN the Vista GUI and even DX10-based games (albeit slower than the then-top-of-the-line...but at least you won't be stuck not being ABLE to with G71/R580).

I opened a corner of one of my presents and saw... a GeForce 6800GS!? Woohoo!!! I'm not spending some $ 450 - 500 on a high-end card anymore... Never!

The X1800s were also 6 months late. They were supposed to be out around May/June, with R580 hitting 6-9 months later. ATI says the problems with R520 production didn't affect R580's schedule, so the releases will be closer than normal.

There are supposed to be refresh parts (R580-"X1900"/G71-"GF7900") in the next 2-3 months, and (maybe?) true next-gen stuff (R600/G80) in the next 6-12 months. Very, very little solid info on R600/G80 yet, though, so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them.

If R580 roughly triples pixel shader performance over R520 like they're saying it might (16 pipes, 48 pixel shaders), it could be a beast... probably not a cheap one, though. :p

The only problem is the 6800GT/U are goig up in price, not down because they are become scare. Why buy old, worse tech when new and better tech is already here for cheaper.
