My parents are still rocking my q9550 @ 4.0 with a Tuniq tower cooler ,8gb ddr2 1000 ram, AMD 5750, Enermax psu, Windows 10. Serves them fine for basic stuff.

They dont make em like they used to Larry.....i remember with some voltage I could almost get 4.2ghz at 80c. At that time I think I had 2 , 2gb 6870' s in crossfire in there.

I recently updated a buddies core2duo machine with a sticker modded q6600 to make it 3Ghz, stuffed it in an oem matx case with an ssd and a 7770. Super happy with it for web browsing as an extra computer, and it could probably play some light games too for their young kid if they wanted it to.

Also picked up a phenom II X4 with bent pins for $5, half an hour of fixing the pins and it fit. Threw it in a nice asus am3 board that was crashing occasionally under igpu use - turns out the bios factory overclocks the onboard gpu to hell and the heatsink sucks. (Seems crappy heatsink design is not a new problem)

Lastly, a C2Q xeon e5450 in a q45 board with the bios tweaked to accept it, notched the cpu to fit the socket, and it runs a happy 3.8ghz. (FSB overclock whilst relying on the chipset graphics is the current limit, not cpu overclock)

I didnt get into computer hardware until llano, which i proceeded to overclock not long after, for the sake of overclocking. A lot of this old hardware is super fun to overclock, not always easy but very rewarding when it works.

I'm waiting for either a lower priced 4c/8t apu where the igpu is smaller, or see where the m.2 gpu ( https://www.anandtech.com/show/13677/innodisk-launches-m2-graphics-card-with-4k-output ) goes and do an am4 8c build with that.

M.2 GPU? I brought up that possibility a year or two ago, I was thinking of my DeskMini PCs at the time, but it's interesting that some company is working on that.

Still rocking my Q9650 w/8GB but the end is near. After swapping power supply for newer model I still get occasional crashed and black start up screens. I'll likely do a new build in the spring.

i'm still rocking my overclocked SuperMicro Quad Opteron rig. Its basically 8 Phenom X6 chips. Normally run them at 3.0 Ghz... but occasionally at 3.3 (all cores) to 3.6 Ghz (16 out of 48 cores run at this high speed).

For some reason i just like the K10 i'll probably update to the Zen 2 3850X Threadripper when it comes out... but for now i don't see any reason for it.

Cinebench R15 cpu score is 3229cb, and Cinebench 11.5 score is 39.8.

Just a few months ago my father was still using an Athlon II x2 215 and the onboard igpu, which basically sucked xD !
I had an Athlon x4 750k and an A75 Pro4 MB, with a HD5450 1Go (DDR2 version, yes it IS possible, and that was better than the crappy IGP). That mades him a pretty good upgrade ahah !

As a secondary gaming rig and space heater. Was looking for a 1090/1100T when I built it. But found they were more expensive than the FX8150. Bought a used X2 240 for $5-10 to test my old board that had been in closet for 2 years. Could actually play Fortnite decent on the x2 240 with the R9 290. The Bulldozer actually performs great for everything we throw at it. Not as fast as my Core I5 but good enough for Fortnite/Roblox which was it's purpose for the kiddo. Would have rather found the 1100T for a price not comparable to a Core I5.

Faster at what, exactly? I boot into my OS in about 15 seconds (it takes me longer to log in than it does to get to the log in point). Off an ssd, the only thing that isn't instant is the internet connection, which out in the country here is kinda slow. I notice zero difference in 'snappyness' with this x4, tight timings 16GB ram, running boinc 100%, versus any of my newer builds (4.8ghz direct-die richland running 2400mhz ram).

An i3 system with 16gb of ddr4 is going to cost me at least $400 cad (being optimistic), it would take 100 years to pay itself back in the maybe 10w idle power difference. Plus, I'd need to skimp on board and ram quality to get there for even close to $400, so it probably wouldn't be as reliable either. All this for quality of life downgrade (loss of overclocking).

Lastly, what fun is an i3-8100? Locked, no baseclock fun, ram doesn't do anything either. If I'm going to throw money at an 'upgrade', its going to actually be an upgrade that will last another 10 years like the processors in this thread, and let me have fun like most of the old hardware too.

For what most of these machines are - web browsing desktops - upgrading to a solid state if its not already would be the only noticeable improvement, besides a good cleaning to keep coolers happy.
