It was obviously a give and take corporate decision, for the TTS you had to give up something, Magellan must have made the decision that the Mexican maps were not that popular in previous version so they lost out to TTS. Not complaining, just WOW "gotta have Mexican maps for everyone" could be used to rename the thread. Never knew a driving vacation in Mexico was so popular.

I count 4 references to maps of Mexico prior to your post and they were all on page 8 of the thread. An old Gary Coleman line from "Different Strokes" comes to mind. :)

Hi folks,

I stumbled on this forum by accident ... I just bought my 3225 yesterday from Costco also.

Question for TimeKeeper or anyone else ... is the 6M POI Data similar to the one found in the Magellan 4250 by any chance!?!?

Thanks ...

BTW, Great work and Great Thread .. <THANKS to TimeKeeper & mmoneytalks ...

Just wanted say that at the Costco in Palo Alto, Ca. the Magellan 3225 was $179.00. Just bought one an hour ago and they had MANY boxes of these units.

Merry Christmas.

I agree that 4 references to MX does not make the FORUM a MX topic. :)

Since theree are over 500 MB of free space in the unit, why not TTS PLUS MX, Azores, Surinam, Madagascar, Antarctica, whatever can fit there??? Again, I always asked: "IF LEGAL" !!!

Yes, Costco has the $20 off again for a total of $179.99 in the cashier, although taxes are for the full 199.99.

Pick the BLUE cardboard... it has the latest firmware on it.

By the way, I did a test today with the 3225 and compared it to a TomTom. Side by Side. Same destination, fastest time in both.

I really liked the 3225. Both "ladies" told me to turn right just 0.5 miles for mmy home. I ignored it since I wanted to get the highway. The Tomtom kept telling me to do a "legal U-Turn" when possible. The magellan 3225 did not take long and re-routed me direct to the highway. Meanwhile, tomtom kept the U-turn story alive for a few blocks more. Then the Tomtom decided to steer me to turn right at all costs. My magellan was already giving me the distance to the highway, and the tomtom was trying to get me to peripheral streets, may be trying to make the U-turn by other means.

I am VERY HAPPY with the superiority of the 3225 over the Tomtom in this test.

Your mileage may vary... These are the results of MY OWN observation.

Good luck!

It is from the 3250 so it is likely identical to the one on the 4250.

Was it in a box or blister pack (plastic)? If so was it primarily white or blue? Was the USB cable within the package or taped to the outside or something? I'm curious about the hardware version. Can you check the version on the System menu and report?

Well, you can try it out easily enough. Just remove the canada map and poi, and see if a new menu comes up. I bet not cause, for example puerto rico, hawaii and alaska are one map, but 3 poi.

U could also use a binary editor to change some names..(first search for the name you wanna change) You may even find out how to add an entry with the editor. (see

Re your first post.. I cannot tell the 1.36 from the 1.24 microcode by the box. The 1.24 is also blue.

I am also interested in an extra country. I would take the unit with me along with my tot(did u know the 3225 comes with an AC charger?) --don't have to be driving. One could rename the file names to start, or if you figure out how to locate the map and poi on the sd, you could have 2 versions, of the sd ram, one with map c and the other map m. Or just rename the files from your pc before you go to the country in question.

Once we do the m country, then there are the european ones. But of course this may be of academic interest only since I'm sure we don't want to find ourselves behind bars in mexico for having an illegal map. (in front of or in, maybe, just not behind)

Hi all. First off, thank you to time keeper and all others that have contributed to this thread. I just wanted to add my information and hope it helps someone as well.

My employer bought 30 of these devices for x-mas presents for the staff and I offered my services to update the POI's on anyone wanting them. I have had the chance so far of doing about a dozen devices and wanted to point out my observations in doing so. First I would like to mention that all devices we purchased had the newer blue front packaging with the data cable included inside the package and not stapled to the outside. It appears the packaging dose not necessarily dictate the firmware of the device. I have seen all three flavors of firmware n the blue packaging (1.14, 1.26 and 1.36). The hardware and map numbers seem to be similar to what has been previously reported in this thread.

I have been able to complete the POI update on all three firmwares. The 1.14 and the 1.26 were done without any problems by using the first post in this thread by the author, TimeKepper. All three were done using just a regular USB to mini-USB cable. I did however have problems when originally updating the unit with the 1.36 firmware. During the transfer on my PC I got a message that the file transfer failed and it stopped the copying process. Had I not been sitting in front of the PC I would had not known as the message cleared itself. I then Reset the device and looked at the file using windows explorer and while the file appeared to be the correct size, I assumed it did not completely transfer the file. I disconnect the device and tried to start using it after rebooting. The device began to hang up and was completely unusable even after numerous attempts to reboot the Mastero.

I then decide to hook the device back up the PC using the supplied grounded usb to mini usb cable and the not the generic one for my phone. I then erased the update POI file and decide to attempt to re transfer the file using the supplied cable. I was able to transfer the updated POI file to the Mastero without problems the second time using the supplied cable. Disconnected and rebooted the mastero and all seemed to work fine and the problems were corrected. The person has now been using the device with zero problems.

Hope that helps some just wanted to pass back my experiences to others.

I am having the same problem as others with regards to WinXP's failure to recognize my Magellan 3225 as a USB removable drive. After connecting the 3225 to my PC thru USB, XP did successfully recognize the unit as a USB Mass Storage Device. However, the system did not assign a drive letter to the 3225 and therefore it was not visible in Windows Explorer. Anyone else managed to get around this?

I didn't install the softwares from the Magellan 3225 CD though. Do I need to do that?

My unit is v1.36 (firmware)

Thanks

Great little head to head competitor test, looks like the 3225 is a real value for the dollar. Hey, along with the Mexico comment, as the original first post in this thread stated towards helping others, thanks for noticing the charity work I do with Toys for Tots, among other things, and the 23 years of service I've completed thus far to our great country with the Marine Corps..... (said sarcastically, all is good)

Update:

My Windows XP is the culprit. I connected my 3225 via USB to my other computer running Windows 2000. The drive showed up and the system assigned a drive letter to it. The volume of the drive is TFAT. So I am good to go now.

Stupid Microcrap.

I dont know if this is the stupid question. Is there anyway to upgrade the firmware on 3225? I have 1.14 and would like to upgrade to 1.26 or 1.36. Please advise.

Hi Jag0009,
you might want to connect your 3225 to the PC first and restart both at the same time should correct the issue.

I was able to check the firmware version by powering up the device INSIDE THE BLUE PACKAGE... just press hard the power on button and use the touch screen with care. Get to the information screen and you now for sure the firmware you are getting. Magellan could make it easier by updating the web site., The 3225 exists if you want to register the device, and only there. No descriptipon anywhere else. No firmware, no manual, nothing. All the Maestro 32XX family also does not have any accessory available yet. If you want a 2nd car charger, good luck, you need to get it from ebay and hope that the device will not enter the USB PC mode that makes it innoperable for navigation while being charged.

If anyone figure out how to change a regular USB adapter to work with the 3225, that would be a great thing. I read something related to pins 4 and 5 being shortened in the power mode, but I could not verify it yet. The original adapter is branded "phihong". I sent them an email, let us see what they respond to my inquiry.

Thanks for the service to the Marine Corps... I do appreciate it !!!

How's the speaker on the 3225? I am trying to decide which GPS to buy as a gift. I am looking at the Magellan 3250, TomTom Go 720, the Garmin Nuvi 260, and the Garmin Nuvi 350.

When I was playing around with the 3250 at Best Buy, I got the impression that the speaker wasn't that good compared to the others. I'm wondering if the display mount was blocking the speakers from the back and made it sound worse that it really is. I want my gift GPS to be able to produce loud and clear instructions while in the car. Thanks.

Hi folks,

I want to share something that I came across this morning using my Magellan 3225 while driving my car. FYI, I have a C240 MBZ ... I am not sure if it makes a difference ...

While I was using my 3225 and had it connected to my Cigarette Lighter using their provided power cord ... I was listening to my favorite AM radio station 560AM in the Bay Area ... and I was getting a little "Static" ... when I switched to 740AM ... the noise went away ... so I guess there is a little Static on the "Low" frequency AM Stations.

Q1: I wonder if anyone else has experienced this with the 3225 unit or any other GPS Unit?

Q2:
If so, is there an easy fix?

Thanks,

G!

Hi Stormrider,

RE: "Speaker Sound Levels"

When I place the unit on my wooden Cigarette ashtray area by my gear shift ... sounds pretty darn loud ... I suppose because of the echo's off the wood. When I hold it by the my front windshiled -- since I have not Yet installed it -- I can hear it just fine however, is not as "Loud" as when I have it echoing off the wood paneling ...

Hope this helps.

G!

It's not as loud as other units out there for sure. But I find it sufficient for my needs. I don't even have the speaker volume up all the way at all times. If you have a louder car and have your radio turned up it might be difficult at times to hear it. But then you can always just use the screen interface to find your way. All of the important information is on the screen anyway.

Thanks Jdoe,

I tried that too but XP still didn't assign a drive letter to the 3225. Anyhow, I got it to work with Win2000 on my laptop (didn't need to reboot either). The 3225 works like a charm, I love the extra POIs.

Many Thanks to Timekeeper :)

I mounted it on my vent (I bought the vent clip from Ebay for my old Magellan 500 long time ago) and the speaker is good enough. I've tried the Nuvi from Thrifty's car rental (don't remember the model # but it's one of the new models) and the speaker volume is around the same as the Magellan 3225.

I have a few questions concerning its fuction. How accurate is the 3225 and how often does it crashes?. Also, I notice that the 3140 uses bad grammar such as, "Turn left in 500 ft, Main st" unstead of saying," turn left in 500 ft "on" main st". I noticed that the 3250 says," In 500 ft, turn left on main st". It appears that the 3140 does not use complete sentences when annoucing turns. does the 3225 versions, 1.14, 1.24 and version 1.34 announce direction with the proper grammer or do they all sound like the 3140 ?

In XP, go to CONTROL PANEL...
Double cllick on ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS...
Double click on COMPUTER MANAGEMENT...
Select "DISK MANAGEMENT"...

If you "see" de magellan disk here with no letter assigned, just right click on the bar representing the disk and choose a letter to map the disk to.

Pls let me know whether it works.

Someone asked what version firmware my 3225 had:
It was 1.14
then I 'bricked' the GPS.

I returned it to Costco and used 'ecolive's trick and powered up the stack of 3225 until I found a 1.36 firmware version.

FYI - be cafeful attempting to modify the Magellen.bmp splash image, I was modding the startup images and the result was GPF in magellan explorer .exe that halted the O/S operation. Magellan support could not offer a fix, they recommended returning it.

As mentioned before the 1.14 firmware models show a green / light green background. the 1.36 model shows a black background.
Very cool.

I'm sure the 1.36 powers up faster and acquires signal faster than my 1.14.

I'm not sure the 1.36 model is as chatty as the 1.14 was. I recall the limited amount of time I used the 1.14 that it seemed to speak more...the 1.36 is more stoic...For example the 1.14 model would tell me to exit San Antonio Road South (which is where I exit). This AM the 3225 simply said exit right 2miles ahead, 1 mile ahead, 500ft...no exit name. Then it got back with the program by stating I was on San Antonio Road South...very interesting.

I am of the opinion that you cannot do anything with the SD card slot on the 3225. I'd like to see a posting from someone that could access RAM from this slot. I have a 512MB SD card from a Palm that cannot be 'seen' as FAT16 or FAT32. I am not even sure how it would be 'seen' by the GPS. Magellan.com describes the SD card as a place to backup the address book, but in the 3225 there is no option in the 'User Option' to backup the address book. If your 3225 can access your SD slot, can you post what model/size SD card and what you did (if anything) to make it work? How does Windows see the SD card (if it does?)

FYI - ~6M POI file uploaded to unit without any problems. Thanx Timekeeper. POI-Factory for all your POI needs.

Got an answer from the car adapter manufacturer. They stated they manufacture it under Magellan specs and that they could not sell it difrectly. They recommended me to call Magellan. I hope their web site post the Maestro 32xx sccessories soon.

Hi folks,:)

FYI ...

1) I upgraded my POI from 1.3M to "TimeKeeper's" 6M version A-OK.
2) I happen to check my 3225 Software version last night in the car ... I think it was 1.26 with Rev 2. My Cardboard box was Blue (Costco).

Q's @ TimeKeeper ...

Q1: Can POI from Magellan 4250 (you know the 6M one) be used on 3225?

Q2: The AAA Info from 4250 ... what is it recorded as? A POI or what? And can it be used with 3225?

Q3: How can I modify your 6M POI to add some Additional info ... such as Restaurants or etc.? What can I use to edit a POI document?

Thanks,

G!
