I thought the 32xx/42xx US48 POI file was smaller than the file on the 31xx/41xx despite having a higher POI count. If that is the case why is an SD card needed if you are only replacing 1 file with a smaller file?

Thanks

I found the answer in an email from David Groeken. He sent me a modified media.cfg file so that the unit will look for the maps and POI's on the SD card. I transfer the maps and large POI file to the SD card and leave it in the GPS and I'm good to go. Had to order a SD card 'cause I don't have one. This will cure the main knock I had on the 3100.

I have a 3200, would I be able to run the 6M db from my SD card?

The POI file on my GPS is 24.6mb. The one I'm replacing it with is nearly 200mb. That's why it has to be run off the SD card.

Gotcha. I'm thinking of the 3140 which was discussed a page or two back in the thread. It has a bigger US48 POI file.

As someone mentioned in the post before yours, this could solve the POI upgrade issue for 3200 owners as well though I chose to eat the BBuy $25 restocking fee and grab the (then $179USD) 3225.

If the 3225 had not been on sale then I may have gone the SD card route since I have a 512MB that I could use.

Here the info on my Mag 3225:

Map - vers. 29
Firmware - 1.36
Hardware -3

I have a question - can we just download the 2.36 firmware update from another model # into our unit? I am not tech savy to try that out!

Anybody know what the difference is between firmware 1.26 and 1.36? How do we upgrade the firmware on the 3225? There doesn't seem to be any reference at all to 3225's on Magellan's web site.

I compared the Magellan 3225 in two flavours: Firmware 1.14 and 1.36...

Same MAP levels, 29, although some files in the MAP directory have a newer date in the 1.36...

The version with firmwate 1.36 has some extra detail, such as presenting the direction on top of the screen : I-95 on version 1.14, S I-95 in the 1.36 version.

Hardware versions are also different, -1 for the 1.14 and -3 for the 1.36 ...

Screen colors are different too: 1.36 -=> NIGHT is shown as green roads on BLACK background... version 1.14 is green on green, not as easy to see.

DAY colors also changed, light yellow background on 1.36, white background on 1.14.

The version 1.36 cokmes in the Costco ALL BLUE FRONT PACKAGE, where the older one comes on the white package with the included cable attached in the outside.

I will return the version 1.14... Magellan is not doing a good job in updating their web site. The model 3225 exists only in the registration area, and you cannot find it anywhere else. Even other models in the market longer time have no firmware update in the web site. Accessories, nothing listed for the "small" maestros...

Since there is no way to get the firmware update via their web site, I am getting it by purchasing a new one and returning the "old one". The POIs trick was a life saver. The GPS works VERY WELL and now POI seems to be fine.

I think Magellan needs to beef up their web site ans support structure.

Cool. Thanks for the update. Sounds like 1.26 is a lot like 1.36. Can anybody confirm what differences there are in 1.26 and 1.36?

For all you 3200 owners out there, I was successful in modifying the files so that the map is on the main drive and the 6M POI file is on the SD card. Without the SD card, the unit WILL map but fail in doing POIs. With the SD card, the unit will both map and do POIs.

First, credits to Timekeeper and dgoeken for sharing their information and expertise. Before starting, backup your 3200.

1. Get the 6M POI file using Timekeepers instructions on the first post of this topic.
2. Create a MAP subdirectory on an SD card (I used a 2G)
3. Copy the 6M POI file (US48_POI.POI) to the MAP subdir on SD card
4. Copy the following 3 files from the 3200 to the MAP sudirectory on the SD card:
Index.mct, NRBM_NA.MGI, and US48.IMI (Do not delete them from the 3200).
5. Edit the Media.cfg file on the 3200 so that #POI Map Data points to
\SDMMC Card\Map
6. When the 3200 is disconnected, it should reset automatically. If not reset with paperclip.
7. Without the SD card inserted, 3200 should map but not POI.
8. Insert SD card and reset with paperclip - 3200 should now map and POI. Anytime you remove SD card while 3200 is on, the unit will need to be reset when the SD card is re-inserted. If SD card stays in unit, you can turn it off and on at will and it will map and POI.
I plan to keep the SD card in the 3200.

Does anyone know how to use a "normal" cigarette lighter adapter (mini-USB) and avoid the unit to enter PC mode (USB connected)?

I have many car power adapters that use a 5v USB cable to charge the cell phone, ipod, etc.

The Magellan seems to "think" that there is a PC connected to it, unless I use the original cigarette lighter adapter shipped with the costco bundle.

I would like to be able to use the many other adapters I have, hterefore I would not need to move the original adpater from car to car.

Does anyone have any clue why there is this "problem" when using third party 5v adapters?

Thanks.

First off credits to Timekeeper and dgoeken and everyone else in this thread. You all have been a great help. To make things a little shorter I am going to quote some info from others but with a few changes as to being able to use the 6mil. POI download for the magellan maestro 3100 owners out there. As you all know the 3100 only has 1 gig internal memory and it is already full. but it only comes with a weak 750,000 POI'S.
1. Get the 6M POI file using Timekeepers instructions on the first post of this topic.
2. Create a MAP subdirectory on an SD card (I used a 1G but you can use a 256mb card as the way I am doing this only took 201mb total)
3. Copy the 6M POI file (US48_POI.POI) to the MAP subdir on SD card
4. Copy the following 2 files from the 3100's MAP folder to the MAP sudirectory on the SD card that you created:
Index.mct, NRBM_NA.MGI (Do not delete them from the 3100).
5. Edit the Media.cfg file on the 3100 so that #POI Map Data points to
\SDMMC Card\Map
6. When the 3100 is disconnected, it should reset automatically. If not reset with paperclip.
7. Without the SD card inserted, 3100 should map but not POI.
8. Insert SD card and reset with paperclip - 3200 should now map and POI. Anytime you remove SD card while 3200 is on, the unit will need to be reset when the SD card is re-inserted. If SD card stays in unit, you can turn it off and on at will and it will map and POI.
I plan to keep the SD card in the 3100. Now with that done I have been having a great time with all the new POI's. And so far so good for two days. No glitches. I am no computer genius. It just seemed to me that it was worth a try to save a little money on an unneeded sdcard. The only thing that I will reiterate again is be sure to do a backup of all the original files on your computer so if something does happen you can always put back the files and go back to stock. I hope this helps everyone as all your posts helped me immensely!

Thanks for all the postings.

I have followed the steps and successfully applied all the improvements on my Magellan 3100. I currently have my POI and US48 maps on my SD Card, now I would like to add Canada Maps and Canada POIs to my SD. Anybody know where can i get the maps:shocked: and POIs.

Thanks in advance

Well, Mexico maps would be good too. That what has been removed form the 3225 to feature TTS instead. I do not think it would need to run from the SD card, since with the new POI file there is a lot of room left in the 2GB internal memory. Would the maps from another unit work? Not sure if this would be legal, if not, pls do not consider this comment. I am not a lawyer .\.

Assume someone post the map and POI, we need a programmer on board to modify the user option menu program "add the line Mexico map" and guide the program to Mexico subdirectory or use the entirely program from 3220( since 3220 and 3225 are almost the same). If not the 3225 will fail to display the map or POI.

Humm, it may be, but I do not thing it would be hard coded in the menu... It would make more programming sense for the application to parse the filetype that represents the MAPS and then build the menu on the fly... that would be a better programming technique...

Great info.......being in the Marine Corps I give and donate many hours of my time each year for the Toys for Tots program and have done so again this holiday season, it gets cold standing outdoors in the winter sometimes let me tell ya, but every kid deserves a toy or gift and I do my part to make that happen.

Love the info in this thread, an excellent upgrade for the 3225, but after reading 7+ pages of this thread, I can't figure out why so much interest in Mexican maps. It was obviously a give and take corporate decision, for the TTS you had to give up something, Magellan must have made the decision that the Mexican maps were not that popular in previous version so they lost out to TTS. Not complaining, just WOW "gotta have Mexican maps for everyone" could be used to rename the thread. Never knew a driving vacation in Mexico was so popular.
