Since this thread has gotten a bit long I'll spare you the "already covered" line...kinda. I bought the 3200 before eating the 15% restocking fee and getting the 3225.

There is no way to update the POI file on the 3200 with the larger one. It has < 10MB free and needs more like 150MB free to replace the puny POI file. It has ~1GB (total) vs ~2GB for the 3225.

The 3225 comes with the nonproprietary USB to mini-USB cable cable needed. It cannot be performed via the SD slot since there is no file management utility built-in which could do this.

I suggest you download the files necessary from the link provided early in the thread as soon as possible.

I checked the POIs. The POIs here (uploaded by Timekeeper is for NAVTEQ maps 1st Quarter 2007 - I found this when I read POI file in text editor). My 3140 has 3rd Quarter 2006 map data. So I guess it will probably not work in 3140. I didn't try - coz I was afraid it will screw up my nice little device.

I would copy the factory POI file from the 3140 to your PC and copy the new POI file over to see if it worked. It isn't an operating system or interface related file but a database. I can't imagine it would mess anything up if it didn't work. It would likely just give you an error message.

The 31xx series is only a few months older than the 32xx series. I would guess the file formats do not differ. I doubt you could brick it by replacing a single POI file as long as you have the original file and a cable.

My 3225 does not have 3.5 mm headphone jack. I see the picture 3225 GPS on Costco website, It has headphone jack next to USB slot(left side of GPS).
Is this picture error on Costco webside or I receive the wrong GPS3225 model?

Just currious, it is not important feature....

My 3225 does not have a headphone jack. The Amazon pictures of all 32xx and the 4250 also show a headphone jack. I wonder if the 3250 & 4250 have jacks and were used for all advertising or something.

So I feel relief that they are using the picture of 3250 for advertise. Model 3225 does not have a headphone jack. This issue is closed.

Just want to say thanks to TimeKeeper for the 6M POI. Got the 3225 last Thanksgiving for 179.99 at Costco and almost returned it... good thing I ran across this forum. Now I'm pretty happy with it.

I picked up one of these and upgraded to 6 million POI. Pretty happy with it overall as compared to my Garmin Streetpilot III. I just have a question... anyone know what orange colored streets mean on the map? I see most streets in white but some appear orange. I can't find anything in the manual about it.

Actually, what you see is a reset button. Looks like a headphone jack in the pictures. Comes in handy if your unit ever freezes. Magellan had a problem with some of their units doing this and patches have been posted to correct it. No patches for the 3225, but someone in this forum had this problem. I had it happen once and the Magellan technician told me to just hit the reset and that should fix it. It did on mine. I would imagine that others have also had this problem. By the way.............THANK YOU TIMEKEEPER!!!

One strange thing I noticed today is my US48_POI.POI is 293 MB in 3140, which was only supposed to contain 4.5 million POIs. But the one with 6m POIs uploaded here by TimeKeeper is just 188 MB. May be it has to do with the way POI files are compressed in 3250 ( I think TimeKeeper got the file from 3250?). So, my guess is it will not work in 3140. Sorry Dunnomuch, I didn't/couldn't change my POI file.

My 3140 has 1.8GB capacity with about 200MB free. I am happy with my unit so far, and 4.5m POI is okay for me.

Does Magellan offer any support at all for the 3225? Since it's not listed on their site I can't see that they do. Also there are people talking about adding Redlight camera warnings to their 3225. Where can I download those files?

mr2th:

I have a reset button on my 3225 too. Iam talking about the 3.5 mm headphone jack/ a little hole above usb slot. Go to costco.com and search magellan 3225 and see a picture for yourself. I think 3250 has this headphone jack not 3225

Interesting. The POI count makes me wonder if advertised POI counts are routinely fudged or if there is a reasonable explanation for the discrepancy. I wonder if the size difference of the file is due to a more efficient compiler since its a later version used for the 32xx. Seems a bit odd that the required and suggested memory is the same for both.

I guess 6m POI = POI of 48States + Alaska + Hawaii + Canada + P.R.
I think required and suggested memory are for the images not the POI. Image boundary is totally different in the two POIs- so I didn't uploaded it.

Good thing about Maestro's is one can look into these files. As it is run on Windows CE, it is only matter of time when somebody will develop different add-ons like picture viewer or mp3 player for this unit.

Good point. That makes it even more difficult for those of us who primarily use them in one region to compare.

As it is run on Windows CE, it is only matter of time when somebody will develop different add-ons like picture viewer or mp3 player for this unit.

It's too bad they don't publish an API so independent developers could offer enhancements. An open source API may make their devices more popular. Even after the US POI enhancement the 3225 has 800MB free.

It would be nice if the interface could be modified too. It seems like the menus could be more efficient without much programming. There are too many selections required to do certain things.

Paty:
I do not see Why not/just upload to your 3225. It is just a database file US POI. You only use it when you are in US land. Your 3225 has room for this and not need to delete it unless you store something in it.

Got it to work. :D

Go to:

dgoeken.com

click on the Magellan 3100 link and it will take you to a solution to this and more fun things to do with your 3100.

Thanks TimeKeeper.

Enjoy.

Timekeeper;
I have a 3100 Maestro which shows only 5.85 meg free out of a total onboard of 1gig. Does this mean I run the 6meg POI database from the SD card? or am I missing something.
Thanks

I just completed the download with no problems on my 3225. At first I could see all the new POI's and was happy. However, 5 minutes later my unit locked up and will not turn on. The battery is fully charged (it's been plugged in for hours) but nothing will get it to turn on.

Is this a memory problem or did I somehow short the unit? Any advice?

I found the answer in an email from David Groeken. He sent me a modified media.cfg file so that the unit will look for the maps and POI's on the SD card. I transfer the maps and large POI file to the SD card and leave it in the GPS and I'm good to go. Had to order a SD card 'cause I don't have one. This will cure the main knock I had on the 3100.
