The ones that hang out at night are great too, when I'm out shooting hoops at 1 in the morning there's always a few poking at the flowers around the driveway, I can walk right up to them and hold out my hand and they'll just start sniffing my fingers and buzzing around my head.

/Wonders what's on your fingers...

Check it out. My dad bought this lil' hummingbird feeder a few years ago, and would fill it with some sugar diluted in water. He didn't know what he was doing, so naturally we never saw a single hummingbird, and my dad just figured there weren't any in our area.

Fast forward to today, and we see some hummingbird solution mix at Wal*Mart. We bought it, filled up the feeder, and BAM! Can't get the little buggers to leave!!! They'll even hover and feed if folks are out on the porch!

My camera skills are lacking, and I took this shot through a dirty window with digital zoom on, but here's an idea of what they look like

I just use a 4:1 mixture sugar to water and the hummingbirds leave me little thank you cards.

Those aren't humming birds. Those are hummingbird moths. They look and act just like humming birds, except they have a lot less fear. Look closely next time and you'll see antanne.

you've never seen one before? they're cool, aren't they? so spastic. I actually had one fly around me a few times when I was out enjoying the sun, and its wings were so loud I thought I was hearing a weedwhacker or something.

Hmmmm.... I just realized that if I buy the property I'm looking at, I should leave the milkweed plants alone, or possibly relocate/transplant them in one huge cluster near the flower garden so I can see plenty of butterflies/moths/etc.

Damnit, you're right, I got pwned by a moth.

The first time I saw one I was debating for 5 minutes if it was a moth or a hummingbird (cut me some slack, it was dark out). The fact that it was HUGE and that it was lovin' on the flowers (I thought moths only loved on lights) made me affirm that it was a hummingbird, but there was always the doubt. Now I know. That sucks. I let that bastard sniff my finger! *feels so used*

in my country i saw people selling these humming birds. the one i saw was very beautiful. maybe they only chose the beautiful ones to sell. it had shimmering feathers with all kind of color/color combination. damn, taht time i was a kid and only wished to squish them with my own hands cuz they looked so cute (kinda an unhealthy way to admire nature, heh?) :D

Wow...hummingbirds...and thanks for the picture, these elusive animals have never before been seen by human eyes.
Yeah yeah, but I never expected to see em in my own back yard! I always thought they were tropical or they only lived in Hawaii or something like that.

They live in Wisconsin too... Pretty far from tropical.

Maybe you should leave a bear feeder in your backyard so you could post pics here...

Just put a regular bird feeder out there - I've seen them knock those over for the seeds before. If they're used to people, leave an old cooler out and see what happens. Look booboo, a pickanick basket! :p

There certainly are Hummingbirds in Alaska. :)

Set up a feeder!

Although, I don't know how far up into Alaska you live.

It's a shame to put such a bird into a cage. (Or any bird, come to think of it.)
