Well, it turns out this crazy EM drive...which we still have no idea how it works...also works in a vacuum, meaning it will work in space. It's like a real-life Impulse engine from Star Trek! They're even saying it could potentially propel spacecraft at near relativistic speeds. Cool

Moving out from LEO, Mr. March, from NASA EagleWorks, noted that a spacecraft equipped with EM drive technology could surpass the performance expectations of the WarpStar-I concept vehicle.

If such a similar vehicle were equipped with an EM Drive, it could enable travel from the surface of Earth to the surface of the moon within four hours.

Actually with current technology it would be possible to keep a small percentage of the world population alive although most of humanity would not survive many of those world catastrophes. However one disease is probably never going to be able to wipe out all of humanity. Even any supervolcanno eruption is probably not going to wipe out all of humanity around the world although something like the Yellowstone Caldera would destroy the western half of America and destroy the world economy in addition to causing problems for the rest of the world because of particles in the atmosphere.

Not even it is just that it makes it even more difficult for the terribly limited resources our governments are even willing to throw towards science. We need like 4 to 5 times the current funding for NASA and that is still conservative on the funding vs. worth of space operations.
