its not that its hard, but there is so much stuff to do and i dont really understand how it all works. any advice for a beginner? thanks

hmm, im pretty new to this game too, ive been a long time fan of 3 though. i only played a few games though, but i would recommend u memorize all the technologies to better help u decide on a stragedy to play the game. whether its militarily, culturally or a mix of some others. Once u think u are good enough go play it online hehe, everything is really fun online =S.

Use F4 alot. When you get a few cities (3), don't forget to build some military. Get to Currency early. Also, remember that you can't please everyone! Try to make a core group of friends. FOr example, if you are on a 7 player game, try to make 2-3 friends and have them convert to your religion via missionaries.

I've been playing since the first week as well... and have easily played hundreds of hours. My best advice is to do lots of chopping to rush things like workers, settlers, and world wonders.

These strategies are the same for single player? i dont understand how building units works...specifically how long it takes. there are like 3 numbers to say how long it takes to build a unit lol. thanks

How does unit building work? Home come the same thing to build takes longer at certain cities?
How does trading work? Do i give something up in return for something? because thats just dumb.

thanks

LOL. I think you need to look up the definition of "trading".

TRADING. look it in the dictuonary!! DUH!

buildings take longer cause each city has a certain ammount a hammers each turn. it takes a certain number of hammers to build something.

for example, city 1 has 10 hammers per turn, and city 2 has 5.

building takes 100. city one finishes it in 10 turns, city 2 takes 20. got it?

Yeah, thanks 😀 if i trade something i have, do i have to rebuild it? Thatd suck...i never traded because of that.

If you're talking about trading resources or stuff you've researched, no you don't have to rebuild it.

Are you talking about trading technologies? No you don't have to rediscover them, you keep your knowlege. Trading is absolutely nescesary especially on difficult games, so don't be afraid to give something away.

It sounds like you need to read the manual and play the tutorial mode.

If you trade, say, cows, you lose the cows until the trade expires, so unless you have two sets of cows it can be a tough decision as to whether to trade them or not.

There are a lot of different strategies which can be greatly successfull - sometimes advice that's great for one type of strategy would be disaster for another.

A couple of more or less universal tips :

Escort your settlers. Yes I know there is nothing near them, do it anyway.

Garrison your cities - the barbarians are standing there, watching you build undefended cities, laughing at you.

Try not to expand too quickly - the cost of each city increases with every extra city you add, so you can quite quickly destroy your economy by expanding too quickly - if you want to make a new city make sure you have enough money before you start.

i just finished a 9 hour game in which i guided the germans to a space victory. i never won with so little war. i checked the stats at the end and i had 44 enemy units killed (not including animals). great game.

Oh...ill trade all the time now that i know i cant lose anything...thats awesome. Seems pointless, but cool none the less lol. I didnt even see a tutorial mode. Been reading the guide by that game tester, good stuff. Thanks for all your help.

You can lose things. YOu need multiple sets of resources to trade them and still retain their benefits.

Quick tips from me:
1. learn to specialize your cities. Categories: GP factory, unit production, commerce city. Try to get at least one of each. This is good for a few reasons. First, it decreases costs (you don't need a library, barracks, market, etc in every city). Second, it helps you plan your empire (instead of plunking down cities in soem sort of grid like Civ3, you now have to consider placement very carefully).

2. Use your advantages. Ex: as a religious civ you want to establish an early religion (usually) and try to convert as many others as possible to your religion. Don't be afraid to switch civics (no penalty for switching). There are tips for each trait, but you must learn to play your traits to the max in order to compete at the highest levels.

3. Choprush. It gives you such a huge bonus in the beginning of the game which can be critical to winning further down the road. It really pays to have two workers and a settler within 40 turns.

4. Do not go for every wonder. It is a waste of time and resources. There are specific wonders that are very helpful, but prioritize. You shouldn't rely on getting a certain string of wonders to win and, just because at the lower levels you can grab 75% of them don't believe this will hold up as you play against higher levels of the AI.

That's all i got for now.

So in trading i can lose RESOURCES, but i cant lose technology, right? That means when trading technology i have nothing to lose? Doesnt seem like so much of a trade, per say. thanks
