No one really. He plays the part perfectly. They get the point across many times that Neo isn't the smartest man in the world, and keanu plays it well and gives a genuine performance IMO.

Not many like him as an actor, but I think The Matrix movies are his most solid effort.

 
i would have endjoyed jet lee, also, Vincent Zhao (if your fimiliar) would have been good. keanu is just to weak for me. i felt as if i was robbed for 8.oo in part 2. But part 1's script was so good i think people would have been content with Master P as Neo LOL.
 
For martial arts reasons, I do believe that Brandon Lee would have been it. But Keanu nailed it down pretty well with the acting especially with the fight scenes so I gotta hand it to him.

like it F'ing matters! they are dead! you cant say that such person would be better for a part when they are dead. i

Now you want to talk about who would be a better actor for the part keep it to actors that are still living. sheesh.

I think that Jet Li would have been pretty believable and Colin Farrell would have been a much better actor for the part.

Jet Li?!?!?! He may be able to kick ass but he has ZERO chemistry with female actresses in movies.. Anyone see "Romeo must die??!?!"

True story: I was in a nyc DVD store (Kims) and started a conversation with someone who worked on some of the effects on the matrix (this was about a year before the first one came out).. I didn't hear of the movie but loved the warchowski's first movie (bound).. We started chatting a lot (for about an hour) and he told me the entire plot of the movie.. I jokingly said "you mean, it's a lot like the terminator"... he thought about it a second and then said "I never thought about it like that.. But, yeah.. It is!"
 
But if Will Smith had taken his place, there would be a random scene where neo raps and a hundred agent Smith's dance behind him. Hmm... I feel robbed now.
