Not who/what you may think . . . from the BBC . . .

The cable news networks have seen a dramatic increase in viewers as a result of the Iraq war.
In the fierce battle for viewers among the competing television news organisations, it has been Fox News Channel, the cable network controlled by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, that has been the big winner.

Fox News, which puts a patriotic spin on the news and became the largest cable news channel in 2002, increased its number of viewers by 300% to average 3.3 million daily viewers during the conflict.

It was a remarkable achievement for the channel, which was only started in 1996.

CNN was second, with 2.65 million, while rival MSNBC, which is owned by the television network NBC, had 1.4 million - the biggest gain, in percentage terms (350%), for the smallest of the cable news stations.

MSNBC copied many features of Fox News, adding conservative commentators, a US flag on screen, and a special section called "America's Bravest" where viewers could send pictures of their loved ones serving in the armed forces in Iraq.

Networks suffer

The big losers, meanwhile, were the TV network's nightly news programmes, which actually lost two million viewers - or 10% - during the same period, after an initial increase in the first few days.

Only NBC, which may have benefited from cross-promotion from its cable channel, was able to stem the decline.

In previous wars, viewers had turned to the trusted anchors like CBS's Dan Rather, ABC's Peter Jennings, and NBC's Tom Brokaw, to interpret the news.

FOX?!? :Q

WHO DID YOU LIKE?
(BBC for me, actually)

Of course FOX had the best ratings. They've got the hottest anchorwomen.

FOX = US version of Al-Jazeera.

Your joking right?

NO~~~
He's not. I totally agree with him.
Do you really think FOX was unbiased?

All media is biased, but saying foxnews is more biased than al jazerra is really a joke.

At least Al-Jazerra tried to show the horrible face of the war: wounded and dead Iraqi people during bombing, air raids, and battles, and their lives. But while I was watching Faux news, I felt like I was watching video games. Just good and evil.
If US media reported this aspect also, I wouldn't think like that.

In that respect, I will say foxnews did not show many graphic images of the horrors of war, but these horrors were reported. At the same time, Al jazerra took every report out Baghdad as fact. Fox News reported what came out of Bahgdad and what came out of Centcom. Al Jazzera rates poorly when compared with Foxnews.

OK, my turn . . . I really curious which of the articles here are so biased as to be worthless? All of them? Half? 10%

AJ: War in Iraq
Headlines:

Arab states hurry to ease American concerns
Saddam Hussein?s last battle on paper
Advisor resigns while US reacts to limit damage
Cashing in on reconstruction
Iraqi citizens wary over Hussein?s whereabouts
Washington sidesteps UN in search for WMDs
UN aid en-route to Baghdad
Self-proclaimed rulers emerge in Iraq
Saddam Hussein?s half-brother captured
Italy will seek extradition of Abu Abbas
Will there be a Marshall Plan for Iraq?
"US more keen on oil than Iraqi people"
Ghost of regime past haunts Karbala
Pentagon draws fire for preacher engagement
SOS from Syrian defectors
Republican Guard commander cut deal with US
Syria refuses to bow to 'Israeli' agenda
Mosul residents tiring of US presence
Iraq?s Shia make themselves heard
Arabs voice fears of US interim government
Tribal strength likely to increase
Pressure increases on US to ferret out WMDs

I simply found AJ "useful" as a balance to the "partiotic spin" from FOX. ;) Also, AJ gives insights into what the moderate Arabs are thinking.

Dont forget the current headline

US bars access to oil ministry, power plant

Iraqi state employees were left questioning US motives when their offices were barricaded and apparently booby trapped by coalition forces

How could they their offices are booby trapped if they were denied access?

Did you read the articles or are you just complaining about the "sensationalist Fox-type" headline?

Yes I have read a few articles and Al Jazerra is far more senationlist than foxnews. However, I will say Al Jazerra is a large step ahead of state run media.

I really can't say which is more - they both have unique "styles" well suited to their respective audiences . . . I never used FOX much . . . occasionally their TV reporting (I must say the scene in Basara with British troops kicking in doors looked exactly like COPS) but never on-line . . . ABC/NBC filled in for the American news I watched most. BBC late night.

I can see where AJ's "style" might be annoying to an American viewer. ;) However, reading between the lines and taking their opinion with a grain of salt all the while getting the "gist" out of the article (i.e wading through the BS) was "worth it" for me.

Actually, Al-Jazeere was less bias. Watching Fox news makes me wanna puke. The reporters and anchors would always use the term "we" when refering to the war. "We" took over a city, "we" captured a "bad" guy. They act like they were actually involved with the war in a military capacity. Unfortunately, CNN and MSNBC weren't much better.

That may be true for you but Fox (your worst) was No1, CNN - #2 and MSNBC third.

"Something" worked for them.

It's funny how Fox will show anything pro-Bush or "pro-American" :p long before anyone else ( CNN, that's the one I watch) does.

I think it is funny how only the most Republican people I know look to Fox for "news". Hell, after watching TV at my grandparent's house, the Iraqis are waving American flags wanting us to "liberate" them, i.e. install a pro-US government in Iraq.

Just think if France tried to install a pro-French government in the U.S. in 1776? There would be chaos, rioting, unlawlessness. Wait a minute... what's going on in Iraq right now?

Oh yeah... :p

In the end, honestly, does it really matter what the Iraqi people want?

Guess my answer.

Well damn, people watch Fox News because it was fair and balanced... I know it is because Fox told me so. :)

Yeah, I'll admit I watched a lot of Fox...
Sometimes ya just need some patriotic news. I'd be flipping through certain channels and there'd be times the doom and gloom of the other news outlets would lead you to believe we were losing the war. All the naysayers, all the doomsday scenarios, all the ex-foreign diplomats and ex-generals shaking their heads... at some point, you just want a little reassurance and someone to tuck you in. It's the patriotic connection that helped them rake in viewers -- and Jennifer Eccelston

I wouldn't equate Fox to state run news though... If they reportedly said "we" are doing such and such, I'd assume it was an embedded reporter who was referring to his group. The same reporters are the ones who are broadcasting mostly in real time and on-location giving the rest of us as best a first-hand account of the war as possible. I think it's fair to say all stations had some breaking stories turn up false, it wasn't endemic to just one. However, AJ was pretty much left with pie on its face after the take-over of Baghdad came about so quickly... Anyone who relied soley on them was left wondering why they were misled by Saddam and the Information Minister's rhetoric. It's safe to say that even AJ doesn't completely have a finger on the pulse of arabic sentiment at the moment and they're guilty of as much sensationalism as the next source.

It's true Fox doesn't show as much of the graphic horrors of war, but they're also quick to point out that it does exist... It's also fair of them to speculate that many dead Iraqis may have been victim to human shield treatment or executions -- some of that we'll never know the truth. It's fair for them to prop up our troops on a pedastal, show that our troops are strong but also compassionate. Remember, we are being watched worldwide and governments study us for weaknesses. I'd much rather allow Fox to try to find ways to build common bonds and patriotism than pick everything apart leaving us worse than we started. There has to be closure to all this sometime, somewhere.
