All music companies can die right now, all artists can croak too for all I care. I already own all the best music that has come out in the last 40 years, and as far as I am concerned, nothing better will ever come out. All the great stuff has come and will stay with us forever! As long as we pass on the good music to our kids then the good stuff will live forever! My son (who's 10) has his own turntable (compliments of me :) ) and knows a lot about good music. How many 10 year old in NYC know all the lyrics to "I'm your captain/Closer to home" from Grand Funk Railroad? Mine does, thats why we need to introduce the good stuff as soon as possible to our children so they don't buy into the crap that is out there today!

Just had this discussion with a co-worker yesterday, and I brought up the fact that my generation (definition of 'my generation=the teen years that form your life and give you a personality) had crap to show for music, as synth pop was all the rage. Culture Club, Madonna, Genesis, The Police ... bands that had left a musical legacy but now you hear artists doing a remix or cover of the songs and you just sorta laugh.

I was very into Alternative when that hit in the 90's, and altho it wasn't 'my generation', I was in the Gen X age group that attached itself to that music and played it loud and proud. So, what will kids 20 years into the future take from this musical generation ?? 50 Cent ?? Britney ?? Ashley Simpson ?? ughhh ...

As hard as I try, I don't hear worthwhile music, and we can blame Clear Channel for that. They've gotten the government to ease the monopoly rules in radio stations and bought up all broadcasting, churning out this sewer pit of packaged junk that costs little to market and provides even less to listen to.

Wanna know more about this monopoly ?? Check here for more info.

How about Velvet Revolver?

Velvet Revolver = Gun's and Roses - axl rose + lead singer from stone temple pilots....they definitely rock, but thats because they are basically an old band.

Without Axl or Izzy they are nothing. Contracrap blew hard. We can only pray the next album is 1000x better.

:music:Just take those old records off the shelf
I?ll sit and listen to ?em by myself
Today?s music aln ?t got the same soul
I like that old time rock ?n? roll
Don?t try to take me to a disco
You?ll never even get me out on the
In ten minutes I?ll be late for the door
I like that old time rock?n? roll

Still like that old time rock?n? roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock ?n? roll
Won?t go to hear them play a tango
I?d rather hear some blues or funky old soul
There?s only sure way to get me to go
Start playing old time rock ?n? roll
Call me a relic, call me what you will
Say I?m old-fashioned, say I?m over the hill
Today? music ain?t got the same soul
I like that old time rock ?n? roll

Still like that old time rock?n? roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock ?n? roll

I miss the early 90s. That's when rock was the biggest (within the last decade anyways). I remember back in 1994-1995 when Pearl Jam was the biggest rock band in the world and concerts were selling out within 7-8 minutes.

Heh.. I never considered Pearl Jam as "rock and roll". To me, they were and always will be the personification of grunge. In my eyes, "rock and roll" is Van Halen with David Lee Roth singing (listen to the song "Running with the Devil").

Pearl Jam is definitely grunge but out of Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, the owe the greatest debt to classic rock. It's why mike mccready is one of my favorite guitarists.

glorifiedg790,

Gore and fried version of a pelican :D . I'm waiting for their new CD to come out...hopefully it'll be out by summer time but I'm doubtful. It's supposed to have a more punk and rock tone to it.

Along those same lines, I think we've moved into a 20 year cycle of music. For the last 40 years or so there have been basically two sides to music (Rock and Electronica) and they alternate popularity. The 90's popular music scene was almost entirely driven by guitar players who created their own music, but now we're seeing popular music that is manufactured in the studio and that the individual artist has little involvement in creating (other than adding a voice track). IMO It's only a matter of time before current Rap and Pop sales taper off and we see another 'rebirth' of Rock. There was one after Disco; there was one in Seattle. When the people tire of what's popular currently, then there will be rock.

:music: Random lost souls have asked me
"What's the future of rock'n'roll?"
I say "I don't know does it matter?"
This and that scene,
They sound all the same to me
Neither much worse nor much better

We're so fvcked these days
We don't know who to hate or who to praise
Yet we consider this our suffering and pain
When we're so privileged, a fact
We all forget about as
We go whinging all over the place.

How we've laughed as they shoveled the ashes
Wrath hath soured
Blood and death, we will pay back the debt
For this candy store of ours.

Look at those cvnts on MTV
With their cars, and cribs, and rings and sh!t
Is that what being a celebrity means?
Look, boys and girls, here's BBC
See corpses, rapes, and amputees
What do you think now of the American dream?

And our soccer moms and dads
Who raised us brats on these TV ads
I know that they sleep at night
Their conscience is intact
They've convinced themselves of that
Giving money to Jesus Fvcking H Christ

How they laughed as we shoveled the ashes
Of the twin towers
Blood and death, we will pay back the debt
For this candy store of ours. :music:
