It's a topic I have been thinking abour for a long time now, really who should have the authority to be the adminstrator of the net us ( the united states) or an international organization including us ?

P.S : I need to setup a poll, but I never had setup a poll before so I would appreciatte it if anyone can PM the how to details.

Me. I'll control it. As long as I can plug my computers directly to the backbone ;)

I suppose as long as the US tell everyone to STFU when they ask for authority over our backbone we should be OK

If we let a world organization control it we would get screwed. Believe me on that one.

The US should control the entire internet backbone and should charge for internet the way the OPEC is charging for oil.
Lets pay off the national debt in 1 year.

Icann hasen't done a very good job (from a non US stand point), while the US certainly developed the tech the rest of the world also built there parts of the network, shouldn't they have a say in how it is run?

OPEC is a group of nations that have something in common between them , the oil export / production buissnes, and when ppl go to college the first trade related class they take mostly is Econ, there they learn something called supply and demand, I implore you to sign up for that class you might learn a thing or two about international trade IMHO. And the way we don't care about fuel effeciency, I am surprised that gas prices aren't 3 times what they are right now. Oil is getting more scarce day after day, do you expect it to get cheaper ? " Lets pay off the national debt in 1 year. " LOL, if everyone thought the same way as you do, the nation will be in debt for years and years to come.

according to the movie "net force", the internet backbone is stored in a drawer in the oval office, with blinking numbers.

I think it is important to look at the countries that are leading the charge to have control taken away from the USA. Countries like China and Iran and African despots. Countries that restrict their citizens use of the internet.

The United States takes a relatively laissez-faire approach to the internet. Could it be better? Yes. But I think it would be much worse if China and Iran were to start dipping their hands in this particular cookie jar.

Uhh... well registration etc who really cares
The backbone? Well, the US backbone is not, and will never be gov't run. It is private and publically owned companies that intertwine via public and private peering points.

Edit: Oh and Spidey07, dead on as always.

"look at how they put savage f*cks in charge of human rights lol" everyone is a savage f*ck from the others point of view, did you read the news latley link killing those f*cks is fine by me they deserved it just like every other terrorist out there, but making them face Mecca, and burn them in an obvious disecration of Muslim's beleifs is a provocation from our side + it's a direct violation of the geneva convention and savage acts like that are why we are not making progress no matter where we go.
And guess what we have used to get over there in our vehicles, yes it's things like this, have you ever heared of the children of Iraq during the sanctions take a LOOK
that's how we powered our SUV's and our absoultely ineffecient gas guzzling cars.
