and no...un institutions are silly. look at how they put savage f*cks in charge of human rights lol.

Example ?
Cuba, Sudan, China, Zimbabwe

"look at how they put savage f*cks in charge of human rights lol" everyone is a savage f*ck from the others point of view, did you read the news latley link killing those f*cks is fine by me they deserved it just like every other terrorist out there, but making them face Mecca, and burn them in an obvious disecration of Muslim's beleifs is a provocation from our side + it's a direct violation of the geneva convention and savage acts like that are why we are not making progress no matter where we go.
And guess what we have used to get over there in our vehicles, yes it's things like this, have you ever heared of the children of Iraq during the sanctions take a LOOK
that's how we powered our SUV's and our absoultely ineffecient gas guzzling cars.

Yes, thanks for the update Chomsky. Difference is, those soldiers will be tried and punished if found guilty.

Look again at those children and then go look at Saddam's palaces that were built during the time of the sanctions and then tell me if if that is the fault of the sanctions.

The backbone? Well, the US backbone is not, and will never be gov't run. It is private and publically owned companies that intertwine via public and private peering points.

Edit: Oh and Spidey07, dead on as always.

Its a WONDERFUL organization.

dang intarweb couldn't run without it.

Considering the way intelectual property issues are going in the US, maybe it isn't a bad idea to put control of the net someplace that isn't controlled by RIAA/MPAA/MS/etc.

Uhm... P/N

I think it is important to look at the countries that are leading the charge to have control taken away from the USA. Countries like China and Iran and African despots. Countries that restrict their citizens use of the internet.

The United States takes a relatively laissez-faire approach to the internet. Could it be better? Yes. But I think it would be much worse if China and Iran were to start dipping their hands in this particular cookie jar.

I can't believe what I am hearing, didn't you hear about how Microsoft and Yahoo were helping the Communist Chinese government catch reporters that were stating their free opinions on the net.

And why do you keep complaining about China and Iran, would you think if there were going to be changes in how the internet is dealt with, would you think that everyone in the world will present the internet on a golden platter to CHINA AND IRAN, we are talking about globalizing the internet not hand it over to fckin China and others.
But the way I am looking at it , we might have to give up the internet to China sooner better than later LOL here
you go

Yes I did. One more reason why China and Iran should not be allowed to give input beyond their own borders.

And if you globalize the internet under the auspices of UN control as has been proposed, who are the countries that are going to have input into that control? China...Iran...Sudan...

They do have a say in how it is run, China already filters their internet. What the UN (or some of its member countries) really want is control over the USA portion of the internet. The fact of the matter is that they all wanted to hook up to the nice little network we built, and we were nice enough to let them. Now that most of them are hooked in, they want to complain about how we run it.

Personally I think that Anand should run it. :D

Beach... It is broke.

HOWEVER.... The proposal put forward by the EU (which subsequently lost all credibility when certain less desirable countries said "oooh that sounds nice") was not one where any actual country had any ability to limit internet access anywhere else in the world, only inside there own borders...which is the same as it is now.... The main issue (as far as I understood) was about the release of top level domains.

As to "go start their own". They could well do that, the infrastructure is there and if enough countries went along with it... and it sounds like enough countries are dissatisfied with the current organization (which bends like a straw when pressured by the US government, see .xxx for details) that it's a possibility.... very unlikely, but possible. Which would ofcourse be a massive blow to all economies aswell as a blow for the current "freedom" of the internet.

I really wish China hadn't sided with the proposal though..

I don't want the UN to take control, I want a private company, one driven by profit not government influence with a multinational board looking out for the best interest of e-commerce. Nothing else will do what I feel needs doing.

Oh and for the "OMG UN humans right council" people. Read the UN charter. It's pretty clear on giving EVERY nation a moment to be heard, and while the Human Rights Council is headed by what I would call "loser nations", the US and others are perfectly capable of vetoing any action that seems like a less than desirable idea.

I lost my point, good night.
