You people, especially Skoorb, need to wake up to the realization that you get what you pay for... most of the time.

Yes, there is a difference between jeans that cost $25 and jeans that cost $100. No, there isn't much of a difference between jeans that cost $100 and jeans that cost $600.

However, not all consumer goods are created equal. Especially clothes. I don't care if you argue until you're blue in the face; a $750 pair of shoes will last forever, but a $75 pair will be lucky to survive a few seasons. You can't tell me there is no difference between those shoes until you've walked in them.

I'm willing to wager that Skoorb's wife doesn't own any $600 handbags. Trust me, buddy, good-quality luxury goods aren't just for show - they're for people who appreciate the quality and can afford it. If you can't afford it, then yes, I agree, you're a label whore.

The woman in the article is a label whore. She can't afford it. The article is written for people who can't afford those jeans.

If I want to walk around in a $1,200 blazer I'm going to because I can, not because I want you to think I can.

I have a cousin who bought a $450 purse (well.. not much of a purse, more like a cell phone holder). I was like "wtf, that's a waste of money." Her response was "but it's a fendi!!"

My $80 shoes just now reached the point of needing replacement. I bought them in January of 1997 and have worn the hell out of them.
NO pair of shoes will last forever. The sole will be worn flat at some point.

Granted I've never come across a $600 pair of jeans, I can imagine that someone could tell the difference in quality also. I'm sure a lot of the cost of the pants are due to the name/label, but there's still a difference in quality, even if it may be very little. I don't understand why people have to put others down just because they wouldn't spend the money themselves. If you won't spend money on some higher quality items, good for you. No need to bag on others because their taste is different.

its called Skoorb. if you don't have the same beliefs with him %100, he knocks on you. i've been around these boards for a while, and its always been that way.

come on, this is the last place to ask about this kind of stuff. I don't think anyone on this board (mostly guys) will justify spending that much on fashion. If you ask this to women, I think you'll get a different set of responses.

I laugh at people who spend money on something that can be had for a tiny fraction of the price. You see, if you're paying $600 for a handbag, for instance, and I can buy a generic knock off of the same one for $30 and it looks exactly the same, I win and you lose. People are dumb.

Skoorb, they win... because if they can purchase a handbag for $600, what they're really saying is that they have money to piss away and you don't (collective you, not you personally). Its about making a statement for those kinds of people. They're paying the price for the name associated with the product and because they can pay the price for the product.

I personally don't understand that mentality, which is why I will not be a very "popular" rich person. That's not to say I haven't bought expensive items... I have a few $2,000 suits, but I bought the tailoring and the materials; not the name... I also have a few pairs of shoes that hit the upper $200 range, but they're Allen Edmonds, and those are designed to last a lifetime (you can even send them back to Allen Edmonds to be 'recrafted', and they're returned practically new).

I'm all for buying for quality, but the sad fact is that most of these premier designers use the same materials for jeans that Levi Strauss uses... its all about the name and the status associated with that.

and even levi strauss has closed its last US plant in favor of outsourcing the manufacturing to foreign countries (read CHINA).

You know, this post is really asinine... A lot of users here at AnandTech have thousands of dollars in hardware and devices and we continually jump on the latest and greatest hardware, even those that don't, what about any games that you might have bought in the past year, or DVDs? I'd estimate I spend $1100 on DVDs a year, since I usually buy one or two every Tuesday when new ones come out. I'd estimate I spend about $500 a year on games, and I definitely spend about a $1000 a year on various hardware.

How does this make me any different than the woman who buys a $600 pair of jeans and wears them all year? Or even half the year? Or even 3 months out of the year? How can we quantify the value of each product? If she wears her clothes more than I use my games, does she get more value out of them? We pots should be careful we aren't calling the kettles black.

exactly, it shouldn't matter at all, yet people care so much about what other people spend their OWN money on. to each their own.

Slightly off-topic but I just wanted to add, I think it's a waste buying expensive designer clothes if you don't have the body for it (i.e. tall and in shape).

Carry on :)

What I find most interesting about the responses is the women (or men?) that scoff at the thought of spending $600 on a pair of jeans. And they make comments like "I can't imagine spending that much on jeans. Mine are only $100" Most of people spend $30 or less on jeans. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
