I believe it to be. Ensemble Studios then Blizzard.

I still play Starcraft alot. But I think AOE2 TC has by far the most intuitive interface and hotkey system out. Its a blast to play on the zone.

Blizzard - Starcraft is STILL the best RTS game.

AOE is pretty damn fun though...

BAH!
Ensemble doesnt stand a chance against Blizzard, ever since WarCraft Blizzard have ruled the RTS market, AoE vs StarCraft or WarCraft 2 is like pitting Daiktana vs Half Life.
Well, not that bad, but you get my point :)

My vote goes with Blizzard. both Warcraft II and Starcraft have kept me entertained for more hours than I would like to admit. I have played C&C and AOE2 enough to have them get repetitive. They seem to lack the balance that the blizzard games have. I mean you can really have different strategies for offense and defense and not know how the game is going to turn out. AOE2 for example, after you play it for awhile you feel like you are forced to upgrade on a specific path in order to stay in the game. It is like a race to acquire gunpowder and cannons to me. Fun occasionally, but thats a race not a strategy.

Sorry for the long rant. The Dune RTS sounds interesting.

Here is some thing interesting.

<< LucasArts Entertainment has announced a strategic alliance with Ensemble Studios to develop a new real-time strategic franchise for the PC. The initial release from this cooperative venture, Star Wars Battleground, will be built upon PC-based technologies created at Ensemble and used in the acclaimed Age of Empires series. Combining the design talents of LucasArts and Ensemble, Star Wars Battleground is expected to release this fall. Future ventures with LucasArts are expected to encompass new technologies developed at Ensemble, weaving next-generation engineering into the premise of strategic warfare within the Star Wars universe. >>

Terran only. Ouch. I play all 3 well. But my fav are the Protoss. Mind control is so cool.
You can build all three races if you mind control drones and SCVs and build with them.

Cavedog. It released the best RTS ever, Total Annihilation. Never played a RTS game with so many strategies involved before.

<< TA was not that good. And cavedog is gone. >>

Nah. TA was the best RTS at that time. SC didn't stay for longer than 2 hours on my game rig after I played TA. SC sprites are downright ugly compares to TA's highly detailed polygons. And TA has a lot of depthes (like strategy and tactics which actually been used by real military deployment) to explore. If you ever played TA online you'd know what I mean. The only thing TA looks pale compared to SC is the story line. But who care about it when playing over LAN or internet?

SC is popular is mostly because of the big name of Blizzard. But unfortunately the opposite hold true for TA so not so many people gave it a try. :(

I'd have to say the Age of Empires series is the best. I only play DeathMatch, and coupled with the zone I have spent many hours on this game. It had more strategies than you can imagine, especially with the multitude of civilizations. Oh yeah, the major reason I like it is because you can pick Death Match post imperial: no upgrading, start with 20k of all resources; intense action through the whole game.

Blizzard.

Of course AOE2 is going to have a better user interface than the Starcraft series. It came out 3 years after SC was released so they can improve on what SC lacks.

I kinda agree with ahfung, TA was an awesome game. Especially at the time. I still remember out the height of terrain was and how the vehicles looked when they went over it. No c&c game was like that... they really aren't like that now. As ahfung said, there was little online play. I remember loggin on for the first time only to find a dozen or so people playing. :(

As for Starcraft, I played it for maybe a week and thought it sucked. I really liked nothing about it. But thousands of others did and to today theres so many playing on battle.net.

I think Ensemble is the best though because Aoe2 and TC are really awesome games. I don't own TC (yet) but I've played it at a friends and it adds so more good to an already good game.

No one likes Westwood? I liked Red Alert 2 a lot. Haven't been playing it much since I've been playong AOE2 but it's my 2nd favorite RTS. Westwood Online is finally starting to get better so you can actually play online. ;)

I still think Westwood make one hell of a game with Red Alert2. TA was boring in single play mode, after you overcame the initial hardships beating the enemy was just boring.

TA is pretty good.. but I like SC better, I'm very impressed with Blizzard can create a 3 totally different groups of units, and balance them fairly well. And all of them have a intermingle story line.

I agree with esung.
AOE had the idea that not all civilizations were equal, what with some villagers being faster, etc and priests effectiveness, etc, but this does in no way compare with Starcraft's balance with totally different styles of playing with 3 races.

Another point is one of the Map Editor. I'll agree that Warcraft II had an awesome editor by itself, and AOE bettered it by adding a random map feature. But starcraft's map editor gives unlimited theme-ability of games using triggers. For. eg., I've tried games where mission req. is to build 40 observers ( Protoss v. Protoss on Island Hop).

Think about it. What would you do? Attack or just expand and build Observers? The game in my case lasted a good 35 mins.

The depth of the gameplay is what amazes me in Starcraft. :)
Blizzard is it.
And Warcraft3 is almost out. It will have 6 balanced races though it will not be like a classic RTS. Blizzard calls it a RPS.

Blizzard. I was frankly dissapointed in AOE2. Of cource, this came right after I played Homeworld, which blew me away. I found the graphics in AOE2 boring, as well as the same old gameplay. Maybe will try it again now that I haven't touched either it or Homeworld in a while.

AOE2 TC is the most advanced RTS out today. Plays very well on the net. The interface and hotkey system in the best today. Tactics and stratgy are endless.

ES is the king of RTS games !!

I agree with RTSgod. TA wasn't that good. I mean come on, the story line does not movitvate you to fight at all, in fact, it is the one that discourages me to play the game. When you play starcraft, the story line is so moving that you almost feel you are a part of the race you are playing. With Terran, you feel a sense of hatred toward the Zerg, with the Zerg you feel cunning and deceptive, and with the Protoss, you feel a sacred honor and pride in protecting life.
