Who makes the best pocket knives?

since my budget was 20 bucks, I'm leaning towards a steal find on eBay for a Gerber Air Ranger.

If not, I'll just get another smaller gerber.

for just a single blade I like gerber,
for more utility stuff a plain swiss army knife (soldier model.. blade, reamer, bottle opener/screwdriver, with aluminum panels instead of plastic)

I never liked the leathermans, or the swiss army knives with 1000 things on them. too damn heavy.

The Air Ranger is cool. It's skinny...sides are flat except for the clip. The textured aluminum gives fairly good grip, and it has a solid locking mechanism. Make sure your locality allows 3.25" knives. Some areas/states have a 3" limit.

I believe that schrade knives are made pretty well.
Oh gerber knives are also great i hear.
Shrade makes awesome pocket knives. I had a sweet little knife out of Brigade Quarter Masters once. Worked well but a buddy needed it and I sold it off for 3/4 price.

Then I went to wal-mart and got the Kershaw Chive. Even nicer.
Do a search on ATOT. I know many people have talked about it.

Most Smith & Wesson knives are made overseas and are made of junk steel.

Stick with a company that is known for making knives, not for making other good products and just slapping their name on a knife.

IMO, good brands: Cold Steel or Benchmade for a fixed blade, and Case for a good all around folder pocket knife. All 3 are made a very high quality steel that holds a good edge. If you want a good pocket knife, go with a "new" used Case from the 1970s. They are higher quality than the junk they make today.

Leatherman FTW, that is if you're looking for multi-tools.

QFT. I picked up a cheap little "Juice" at Target. I didn't realize how handy it would become and the knife is so sharp, I actually cut about 15' of outdoor carpet with it easier than the carpet knife was doing for me!

Gotta be Buck knives. I really like that most of their knives have a lock on the blade so it won't fold on your fingers unexpectedly.

I have Buck 120 and 110 knives that I have owned and used since 1968. The 120 saw action in Nam. I just got a Spiderco and it is excellent. MOD is also good. Lots of good knives in the market.

$50-100 makes a nice carry knife, decent quality but you won't hate yourself if you lose it.

Benchmade is my choice in that price range, but my daily carry is a Chris Reeve Sebenza...
A man with good taste in knives! Here is a pic of my small doublelug Sebenza which goes everywhere with me. Text

For a good cheaper knife I would recommend Buck or Case. Gerber, Kershaw, and Spyderco also make good stuff.

I have a set of forums on my website(see sig) specifically directed at knife users/collectors. Feel free to lurk and check out pics of various knives.

🙂

I've had a swiss army knife, and it's not as useful as I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong it's still cool, but I just don't use it all the time for everything. Half the time when I need something screwed in I reach for a screwdriver before I go for the knife (which has a screwdriver built in). From what I've heard, Gerber FTW.

Premium, no-limit knives? Chris Reeves, Busse, Benchmade, high-level Spydercos, Microtech, Masters of Defense, Extrema Ratio, Emerson

Mid-price, good quality knives? Becker (Try the Becker Necker BK11...it rocks), all other spydercos, high-level CRKT, Camillus

Good-quality budget knives? Becker (LOL Got my BK11 for 38 bucks + shipping), all other CRKT, Kershaw (w00t! Storm rocks, as does the vapor, chive, and any other SpeedSafe-equipped model), Cold Steel, Buck, Case, Opinel

Please stay away from Smith & Wesson. Extremely poor build quality and heat-treat. Same for new Gerbers. Try a Kershaw Vapor for a non-assisted opening knife that has decent steel and is sharp as hell. Or double your budget, go to Wal-mart and get a Spyderco Native with a scary-sharp blade made of awesome steel - it's one of the best deals out there right now.

Also, Ka-Bar makes great budget knives.

Case and Kabar... both manufactured locally for me. Outstanding knives in my opinion - I use them while hunting.
