I just started and have been riding easy trails around Seattle like the Green River Trail and the Interurban, as well as loops around Tacoma. I have a used Surly Crosscheck on the way that I'm going to be taking with me to New Zealand on Christmas

lol, I forgot to post mine. My favorite route is The 3 bears in Berkeley, and my bike is a 2006 specialized allez sport with shimano wh rs-10 wheels. The group set is tiagra + a 105 RD, I think your Surly Crosscheck is pretty similar to my bike because both our bikes use the tiagra groupset.

I stole my Dad's bike.. it it is some piece of crap that i about 10cm too small for me and I've destroyed after only maybe 100 miles of riding. It sucks to ride now so I'm just running to train for NZ

I love road biking. Got some kevlar lining, armadillo tires, and lined the inside with goop because the roads here are so bad...I ride a schwinn 27. nothing special, but it gets the job done.

I think the big difference is that your frame is aluminum. I haven't ridden steel a whole lot but because it is more stable it is supposed to be more comfortable on long rides, whereas aluminum goes faster

I generally go down the Fairfax County Parkway, but I always take my mountain bike so I can explore a random trail if I come across one. Plenty of opportunities there. :) (see map)

I either do that trail or the W&OD when it isn't mobbed. The next step the county needs to take is to train all the drivers that bicyclists have an equal right to the road!

I have a Trek 5200 -- carbon frame and Ultegra components. The weather here doesn't allow a lot of riding, but when I do and am in shape, it's a real pleasure -- especially acceleration, but also sustaining speed.

Well, it's obviously not all about the bike -- getting and being in shape is the bigger part of it, but I have to admit some of it is about the bike -- it's nice to have a light bike with good gear ratios which fits well and works well.

But carbon doesn't fix the roads, and having a fast bike doesn't make you fast..

I love road bikes and cycling. I was riding 3,500-4,000 miles a year for a few years but kind of burned out on it in the last year. I still have two very nice road bikes though and would like to start riding again in the future...it just takes so much time to do it.

Edit-I have a LeMond Zurich with custom paintjob (steel frame) with Campagnolo Chorus 9spd group and a LOOK Carbon Fiber bike with Campagnolo Chorus 10spd group and Mavic Ksyrium ES wheels.

Got a 2008 Windsor Knight that I like to ride on routes around Florida and at biking events. I'm what they call a weekend warrior but I've gotten to the point where I can do 100 miles on any given day. My average speed and inclines need work but thats why I'm getting a trainer this Christmas...

I have a Scott CR-1 (full carbon) w/ 105 components and Easton Orion II wheels. Before having a kid, I rode 6500+ miles per year for a couple of years. I probably still am on pace for around 4000+ miles per year just with commuting. Centuries and hilly 200km brevets are my idea of a fun day. 8 hours in the saddle FTW.

3 bears is nice.

I normally road bike when I don't have much time (if I have time I usually load up the mountain bike and hit trails), so I just go up Old Tunnel from my place near Rockridge BART and then back down. It's a nice quick workout. Or if I have a bit more time, I'll go up Old Tunnel, ride along Skyline, down Redwood heading East, then back up to Skyline on Pinehurst and home. If I really have time I head out to the top of Mt. Diablo and back, and my favorite 100 mile Bay Area route is up Mt. Hamilton, down the back side, North through Livermore, then return past the Calaveras Resevoir.

There are a billion great road rides around here in the East Bay. The Oakland Yellowjackets have a good bunch of route sheets on their web site.

Your profile says you're in SF. Plenty of great riding to be had by going across the GGB into Marin.
