Who is waiting for what to build a new rig?

I'm talking about the new products, particularly motherboards. Personally, I'm waiting on the next crop of KT266A mobos (and their reviews!) to build my DDR rig. I'm still stuck in "100MHz FSB Land" :(

With a purty XP1600 (1.4GHz) going for a paltry $112 (should be $100 by the end of the month) the mobo will cost more than the processor!

I'm waiting for i845-B (ASUS P4B266) and the 2.2Ghz Northwood. After Northwood comes out, I have to wait even longer for the price to drop some. Hopefully by mid-January I can start building.

I haven't really followed Intel lately. Tell me about the Northwood. Is that the P4 on the smaller (.10u?) die?

I grabbed a KT266A board a few weeks ago and I'm very glad I made the purchase. Only $85 for my Shuttle AK31A and this baby flies! I would highly recommend it and the XP 1600+ to boot.

<---My next rig! :) Hopefully, the Abit KR7A-raid...if the reviews are good.

<< 512kb cache >>

Does't the P4 already have 512kb L1 cache? The TBird/XP already does, if I remember correctly....right? Also, .13u process = less heat?

Ahh, I tell you, that KG7 "Flaming AGP Slot" fiasco (which Abit never addressed) DOES bother me greatly. But, I will wait on reviews (hopefully AT does one, pronto) before plunking down my cash. I need/want RAID...so my choices are limited. We'll see how Abit does and what the other manufacturers come up with.

"Does't the P4 already have 512kb L1 cache?"

First, it's 512kb L2 cache, and no, they have 256kb L2 cache now IIRC.

"The TBird/XP already does, if I remember correctly....right?"

No, the Tbird/XP has 128kb L1 cache, and 256kb L2 cache for a total of 384kb.

"Also, .13u process = less heat?"

Less heat, costs less to manufacture, clock speed will ramp higher.

With chip speeds going as fast as they are, I would wait for the Hammer and probably an AGP 8x port with faster DDR Ram.

Tbird and XP / MP : 128K first level, 256K 2nd level. 384 total.

P4 (willamette) 8Kb L1, 256KB L2 level. 266K total

P4 (Northwood) 8kb L1, 512Kb L2......

I am waiting for some new AMD MPX boards like the Gigabyte to come out. Then a major pricedrop for the MP1800 would be nice...
100GB WD drive for 150 US would also be great....

Who has the Athlon XP 1600 for $112? I'm looking at Newegg, and they have it for $128 (with free shipping). Plus a good heatsink makes it around $150.

Basically, I'm trying to decide with Athlon offers the best bang for the buck. The 1.0 or 1.2 are very cheap, but I don't know how much faster they would be than my current setup (Celeron 980).

I'm waiting for AMD to release an AthlonXP 2000+ so that the 1800+ gets driven down in price just a little more.... Oh, and money, I need to wait for enough money to buy the stuff I want. LOL!

Allrighty, thanks for the cache info...didn't know some of that stuff.

TCWO has the 1600 for $113. I hit the "2" instead of the "3" accidently. My fat-finger-bad.

Hammer sounds delicious...but the current crop of mobos doesnt' support it. (AFAIK) It's 64-bit, right?

i am waiting for the right nforce board

no..i am not waiting for the 'next' amd XP 2000+, 2100+ whatever because i think this 60mhz difference is ridiculous anyway.....and honestly....do you think there would be any loud mentioning of a 1.60 or 1.66 ghz XP (over the 1.53/1.60 Ghz XP)...if it wouldnt have the "name" 'XP 2000+' which makes you THINK that actually some milestone has been hit...... nuuuuuhh....i'll get the 1800+ which imho gives the best bang for the buck right now.... so.... no waiting for 'the right CPU' right now ;)

Everything else....eg. Hammer, 333 DDR Ram, 166 FSB etc. already requires even more waiting.....and i am kinda tired of 'waiting'...there's *always* something 'better' out in 2, 3 or 4 months ;)

Waiting on next wave of 266a mobo, next Radeon 8500 drivers, and news of expected system requirements for World Sports Cars driving sim. I may just skip this generation of hardware altogether.

I am waiting for the next set of KT266A or if it's not too far off, possibly Hammer. Hammer looks sooo good :)

But I also want ddr. So I am mostly waiting for the KT266A + higher Athlon XPs.

"Waiting on next wave of 266a mobo"

"I am waiting for the next set of KT266A "

"Personally, I'm waiting on the next crop of KT266A mobos "

Where exactly are all these mobo's coming from?

Asus - KT266A board is out - A7V266-E

MSI - KT266A boards are out - K7T266 Pro2 and Pro2-RU

Epox - KT266A board already out - 8KHA+

Shuttle - AK31 Rev3

Iwill - Not releasing a KT266A based mobo anytime soon...banking on ALI

Gigabyte - Two KT266A boards out

ECS - KT266A board out

The only board not out is Abit...late as usual and looks to offer nothing new over the other guys...just released late like the KG7. Most of these companies already had KT266 boards out, so all they are doing is dropping the KT266A northbridges in and nothing is changing. It's not like there are some revolutionary KT266A boards coming? All this waiting for "the next wave" or the "next crop" confuses me.
