Things I'm waiting for before I build my new rig:

#1 Money $$$$$$
#2 The 2GHz barrier
#3 nForce (review of Asus' and Abit's offerings + availablility)
#4 Depending on the first 3 and their completion dates I may also wait an extra few weeks to as much as 2 months for Serial ATA enabled mobo + drives

no..i am not waiting for the 'next' amd XP 2000+, 2100+ whatever because i think this 60mhz difference is ridiculous anyway.....

well, intel releases cpu's in 100mhz incriments and nobody seems to complain. with every 66mhz they increase, the model number goes up by 100 in hopes of trying to compare it to pentium speed, though they are playing it very modest with their numbers :p

nothing against waiting for a 'real 2ghz' XP....

but that would mean waiting 'til AMD actually releases it...and then some waiting 'til it drops in price so it's affordable.....see right now, the 1900+ is totally overprized....and the 1800+s get cheaper now...i dont wanna know how long it'll take to get an XP (real 2ghz) for say...around $200.....maybe still -some- months to go.....and until this date then for sure there is other stuff around which significantly boosts performance...eg. 333 ram....whatever...nforce with builtin gf4...who knows ;)

Good stuff, guys. Got to love that Serial ATA. I don't think we'll see that (affordably, anyway...but "affordable" is a relative term) anytime soon. I know Intel was showing a box at COMDEX w/no IDE ports...and the little Serial ATA connector, but who knows how long we'll wait for that. ????????????

Now, DDR333 interests me greatly. Bandwith baby! That's PC2700, I do believe. Sheeet, I'm not even at PC2100 yet! :Q Soon, though.

When myself and others say "waiting for.....", well, I'll speak for myself. I'm waiting to see what comes out at COMDEX. Even though MOST major manuf. boards are out, there's always "REV1/REV2/etc. Bugs and all that. Even though I don't think many of the 266A boards have bugs that haven't already been worked out in prior revisions.

The Asus looks nice...but look how far away from the CPU the ATX connector is. I've always read that it's best to have the connector as close as possbile to the CPU as to minimize the loss induced by the boards' traces. Maybe something has changed?

Me, it's a cash and a need issue... I like what I see now with the XP and motherboards... I suppose that some component prices may fall like CPU and video cards while I'm waiting... and will see how motherboard issues fare. Perhaps if I get that tax rebate, that will make a nice portion of the cost of upgrading CPU/Mobo/Case-PS

Mikewired,

"With chip speeds going as fast as they are, I would wait for the Hammer and probably an AGP 8x port with faster DDR Ram. "

Just wondering why you are waiting for 8X AGP? Most benchmarks I've read show that there is only a tiny increase in performance (negligable) when switching from 2X AGP to 4X AGP because there are bottle necks elsewhere in the system. That being the case, 8X AGP is an unnecessary standard until 4X fully realizes it's potential. That probably won't happen until some of the other bandwidth limitations are overcome. AFAIK, there is now 8X AGP standard being implimented now or in the near future on motherboards.

I think Gigabyte *officially* announced their SMP Athlon board today. Looks mighty TASTY! I don't think I want the Asus anymore.

I'm waiting on a good, fairly inexpensive MPX board. That and 2 1800 or 1900+'s... ..drool... I can't wait to drop my 29160 into that 64-bit 66Mhz PCI slot and feel all that SCSI lovin. OTher than that, I have just about everything else i need with the exception of an Audigy.

I upgrade my mobo/processor about every 5-6 months. So this is what I'm waiting for:

AMD:
1. Thoroughbred at 1.8GHz by March/April
2. ASUS nForce with DDR333 or ASUS SiS 745 with DDR333

Intel:
1. Northwood at 2.2GHz
2. ASUS SiS 645 or ASUS i845

Going with AMD, I'll probably save around $350. So that's likely to be my choice. Or, if I want to build a rig that'll last me a while, I'll go the dualie route and get me one of those ultra stable Tyan MP boards or MPX boards instead. And I'll still save some hefty pocket change in the process, so it's all good. :D:D

Intel Northwood P4
and most importantly:
Asus P4B-266

Finally a worthy replacement for my ageing P2B-F

nforce will be way too much (especially since they're just being introduced. give that much longer for prices to drop). oh yeah, that and the fact that they'll basically have a geforce2 mx integrated in the board, lol

hats off to the epox for a nice athlon ddr platform for around 85-90 bucks
