You better believe it. Microsoft blew it with the 360 launch, because it was nearly impossible to find in stores after the first day. Now that the cost per unit should have started to fall, this is a great opportunity for them to perhaps make a profit on the unit.

You never make pofit on the console hardware, its all about software sales. Sure, M$ will milk the console for all its worth in order to suffer less on the losses taken. But after a full year on the market, M$ could afford to lower prices a tad in time to put some major heat on Sony's PS3 and its really high pricing. Nintendo criticized the PS2 and XBox for trying to bring too much to the table when they were staying true to gaming. Apparently $300 wasn't enough to scare people away. $500-600 seems to be pushing it judging from reactions around the web. Is BluRay really worth the premium if all you really want is to game? The console certainly doesn't offer anything else to justify the price - as many have suggested before, by the time PS3 debuts, you could probably buy a Wii and a 360 for about the same cost.

Nintendo has made money on all of it's consoles.😉 As for Bluray being worth the premium for gamers, the same question was asked back when the PS2 was launched. Over 90% of the games were on CD, but now over 90% are on DVD.

But what percent are actually using up the entire DVD without sloppy code?

You really need to see HDDVD in action then. Picture wise, it blows DVD away much like DVD did to VHS.

True. I keep forgetting that.😱

MS Reaction To Sony Press Conference
When asked to comment on the briefing from a competitive standpoint, Shane Kim elaborated, ?I?ve said this before, but there was nothing from Sony?s briefing that would make us change anything regarding our plans. We are very confident in our approach, especially now. We have a much better online story and much better content. Finally, we feel that our superior price point provides us an advantage

Does Microsoft feel in pressure in being the only next-generation system to not feature a motion-sensing controller?

?We actually had a very similar product on the market for the PC ? the (Sidewinder) Freestyle Pro.?, Kim recollected. ?It was a great controller for a very specific set of games, but wasn?t accepted as an overall controller. We considered the technology when developing the Xbox 360, but felt it wasn?t the way to go.?

As for Sony?s online focus, Microsoft appeared confused. ?They talked a lot about building an online community, which is something we?ve already established very well on Xbox Live. Surprisingly, they didn?t mention anything about their online gameplay structure.?

They aslo called Nintendo Innovative!

OMG a compliment.

I imagine they said this becuase they dont see Nintendo as a direct threat.

If you have 4 GB of code, you have a problem. Code doesn't take up a lot of space, media files do - audio, video, graphics.

You guys are being rediculous. Systems always come down to the games available for it. And the bottom line is this: PS3 will have MGS:4, FFXIII, God of War III and Grand Theft Auto. These games will ensure that the system will be a massive hit. And I don't understand why the pricepoint is pissing people off.

It comes with a Blu-Ray Dvd player, currently available only as a standalone for $1,000!

Take for example the XBOX 360:

$400 HD version, $75 for wireless adapter, $100 for HD add-on, leaves you at $575! And thats if and only if, they can afford to sell a $500 add-on for $100!

And nothing against the 360 either, its a great system, its just that the Sony hype machine is unbelieveable. It can kill systems before they even get a chance (Dreamcast?!?).

But remember they're offering a Blu-ray Player that can't play movies at full res for $500.

They didn't even mention GTA at all in the conference(that I remember). I'm wondering if that deal is still there for Sony. And I don't think the average joe, who can barely understand buying an HDTV, will see the benefit of a Blu-Ray player while choosing which console to buy for little Timmy.

No 1080P on the blue-ray? that sucks then. my mistake.

It's hilarious that the home theater guys (avsforum) are all pumped and looking to pre-order when they saw the $600 price and all computer guys are pissed off and calling sony biters and all that stuff.

I don't like the motion idea because it seems like it would only be useful on a handful of games. They should have had the motion sensor and the vibration, but only one thing on per time. When exactly are you gonna use motion sensor in Madden? It's sure nice to have the rumble though. Of course it would look even more tacked on if they had both and it depended on the game which to use.

Oh well. If I got a PS3, it would be mainly for Blu-Ray, so I don't really care too much.

BTW, austin316, the $600 version has HDMI, which is why it can do 1080p. The $500 doesn't have HDMI and can do 1080i over component, just to clarify.

Wasn't the $600 version supposed to have dual-link HDMI, meaning it could output to two displays simultaneously? That along with support for up to 7 controllers was the only reason I was interested in the PS3 over the 360, I figured multiplayer/party games would be insanity.

So did they scrap that, and if not, does that mean the $500 version of the PS3 will lack this feature?

And it seems like everyone has switched up from Nintendo who? To the wii is looking like the best option for me... lol funny how that works.

$600 PS3 - One HDMI, support for 4 controllers
$500 PS3 - No HDMI, Support for 4 controllers, no wifi, no memory card slots, not upgradeable, 20GB HDD

Sony dropped alot of stuff from the hype of last year's E3. The number of ethernet ports went from 3 to 1 and the number of usb ports went from 6 (or 7) to 4 along with now having only one HDMI port.

Let's just say that I'm not paying extra just because a system has a new and improved DVD player that will then cause me to spend more money on new and improved DVDs. I just finished replacing all of my old VHS with DVDs not too long ago and I'm not about to start over again.

Wow, are you serious? That's one hell of a castration... I should've known they'd drop all the good sh!t last minute just like every other console they've released.

Yeah, the hype machine is really working great in this thread and every other thread i've read.

By the time blueray is really mainstream, the drives will be $29.99.

I wouldn't pay extra for that feature in a games console.
