The best trained, and most exclusive special forces in the world are the USAF Combat Control/Pararescue troops. There are none better.

EDIT - Oh yeah, they also don't need toothpaste to survive, they are trained to survive with nothing....indefinately.

A Brittish SAS is one bad sumbitch, and don't believe any different.

I saw their training first hand. It makes Seal training look like Girl Scouts.

I figure they all are about the same because they all are in the elite class

We aren't comparing marine corp and army vs the SAS

Your talking of the finest vs finest...

Heck, I think the Canadian special forces are equally as good, if given...cough cough...a chance

Canadian special forces are getting their chance, and are on the ground in Afghanistan (I live next to Canada, I listen to their radio stations, it was on their news) And are equally good.

All of you should bear in mind that most western special forces groups do in fact have regular exercises together, and all are very good at their particular task. This SAS article is a bunch of garbage, and reminds me of the Montgomery - Patton rivalry in WWII. Rivalry is good, but insulting and blaming American special forces for casualties is not.

It's kinda funny anyone connected to the Gulf War would ever complain if connected to the SAS. One of the biggest operational blunders ever made by a team of SAS soldiers was made during Desert Storm.....The whole team was captured or killed.....

Btw, the only fair comparison is SAS or Seals. Special Forces be they American, British or who ever, have a very different function.

Well, i'll say you can't really say whose better. When you start comparing the top 1% of any population or sample, you're going to find that the comparison isn't the same as if you were comparing a normal population. For instance, you can grab 100 random people off the street, and have them do a 100m sprint, and it's very easy to distinguish the fastest from the slowest. But when you try to compare the best of the best, and in this case compare Olympic 100m runners, it's not so clear.

That's not saying you can't, but it's a lot more difficult... you would be able to tell who the best Olympic runner is if they won 5 competitions consecutively. And you would probably be able to judge which special forces was the best if you could compare all their accomplishments or failures, but you can't... but much of it isn't released to the public.

Although not listed, I vote for the Russian Spetznaz to be the best and most ruthless in the world.

Look, special forces have their specialities. Comparing them against each other in a general fashion is pointless. For the USA, if we want to take an airport, well, the Rangers train for that (they sent the SEALs in to do that in Panana and the SEALs, for a special forces team that outnumbered their oponents, got their asses handed to them). You want to take out an oil rig, send in the SEALs. You want quiet recon, send in Force Recon. Hostage rescue, send in Delta. Training the indigenous population to fight for themselves, send in the Green Berets. It all depends on what the mission is.
I do agree that the Spetnaz are likely the most ruthless. Then again, they are a product of the russian military, which has never had a problem with unsafe conditions, ie an American unit has a man die while on exercises, his CO is likely to be in trouble, whereas if it happened in the Russian armed services, his CO would shrug and continue on.

I have seen Seal boot camp with their Hell Week. I doubt if anyone who survives that take kindly to being called a Girl Scout.

I think it's safe to say both SAS and Seals are tough SOBs, tougher than you or I.

Hell week is not named hell week cause it's a fun time but I think SAS training may be more heartless, and that contributes to them being hard-asses. One branch of the SAS (I think it's still SAS) is their heavy winter group and in this group only a small number of regular SAS (who are kick-ass by anybody's standards) can make the grade to enter this group of deep winter fighters. These guys are hardly even humans anymore.

Considering the Delta Force is our best spec op group, and it was modeled after the SAS, uh, the SAS... Although there are atleast two Delta Force officers that trained with the SAS. And no Israel's Special Ops forces is not the best, they are a distant 3rd.

Yeah right, like a Limey would have any idea what toothpaste was!

What is it with English teeth? I was talking to a guy the other day and all I could think of was 'oh my god, his teeth are BROWN'... And this is a senior exec. Weird, huh?
Mind you, "I'm Sherriff John Bunnell" takes it waaaaaay too far.

They drink a lot of tea. And they don't screw many people, so it's not important to them.

Russian Spetznaz I second that vote. Those guys are some crazy mofo's. I seen one of their training a while back on the Russian Television Network and they had to go into the desert with enough food and water for 3 days and survive a week. They say guys biting off and drinking snakes blood and what not. They are pretty hardcore.
