Who invented WSAD + Mouselook in FPS?

Was it by the game company or the consumer?

For me, I *think* it started around Quake II. I learned to use mouselook for the first time, then the game suddenly becamse super easy. I could run circles around these single-player enemies and I could wiggle my way through hundreds of enemies at once..

Wasn't it invented by the QII tournament winner Thresh Hong?

System Shock in early December of 1994. Then Marathon was released a week or two later and had it as well.

EDIT: Oh, which company. Then it'd be Origin Systems.

You sure? Maybe the updated version included it AFTERWARDS... I don't remember QI at the original release had it.

My Open GL quake has mouse look, but IDK remember if it was in the orginal. Q2 was the first game I remember having mouselook by default (even if they did set you up with the arrow keys instead of WASD...)

Marathon is the first game I remember with mouselook, however it was simple enough that most of the people I know still used arrow keys + mouselook. I didn't start using ESDF until Quake II when the ActionQuake mod required quick access to a lot of buttons that just could not easily be reached from the arrow keys. I came up with it myself as it just seemed like a good spot where you could easily reach a lot of keys.

It was in Marathon, and you could even look up and down as opposed to most games at the time which only had side to side mouse look.

lol those are the games that had the auto aim that was always on...as long as you were facing the enemies...you hit them :p

It also has to do with the game engines, no game engine was completely 3D until QI. All Dooms and Duke games had awkward skewing problem if you were to look freely with mouselook.

Those games only had horizontal mouse look from what I remember.

Yup and as long as enemies were horizontally lined up, vertical aiming was done automatically This was also true for Duke3D & Quake I. The true mouselook without auto-aim wasn't til QII.....

No... even QII had auto vertical aim.. I'm so confused.

[edit]
Oh yea, we totally forgot about Half Life. It was HL1 that had 100% free mouselook.

huh? starting w/ q1 you had to take into account vertical aim. unless you have some cheat on or something

I just recall having to add the +mlook to the command line for Q1... along with LOTS of other crap.

Marathon had mouselook as we know it today, but the default keymap wasn't WASD. So you had arrows + mouselook. So I'll credit Bungie/Marathon/Marathon 2/Marathon Infinity.

Edit: Ah, System Shock had it first by a few days or something stupid like that. But Marathon was still the better game.
