yeah so I am looking for reasons not to get one. bloated is the prevailent reason. I am not quite sure what they mean by bloated. AFAIK I thought they did use the top of the line parts. I've built my own systems in the past and its just too much hassle for me dealing with tech support on my own machine.(i've had nothing but probs)

Are you crazy - I could build a system that would still kick an Alienwares ass if I had unlimited funds :p

I would go Dell or buy a mac for my graphical and DVD burning needs.

Let's build a decent system, put some chrome fan covers on it and slap a big "Type-R" sticker on the side

bloated as in probably things you dont need that and they include like software... all OEM PCs come like that anyway... or maybe the markup in price. i dunno. voodoo and FalconNW are expensive too... i mean $3k for a PC is :Q But whatever... to answer your question... id go with go with Voodoo. I still don't see how their systems would be more reliable than one you could build yourself.

i'm sure you could request just the bare bones OS installed and configured without the additional bloatware. The price is steep but the support is what you are paying for. I'd rather deal with one company than have to send parts back to 6 different manufacturing companies when there is a probelm.

When I last checked, those laptops are waaay too heavy. I think they're mostly designed for desktop replacements rather than mobility. But as for the original question, if I had unlimited money, sure, I'd buy an Alienware. My laziness prevails. And plus I figure I may as well inject as much money into the US economy to help others out.

Get one, no real reason not to once you take money out of the situation. Their aurora system is pretty cool.

I'd say no because of slow delivery time and weak / slow customer service, at least according to a few recent threads in General Hardware and here (use Advanced Search and keyword "Alienware" to search multiple forums at once).

On days when rice madness starts to infect my brain I like the alien-head shiny metallic cases (too bad the purple is gone :( ) but for prebuilt I'd probably get a Dell or maybe a Falcon Northwest. Voodoo's weird and badly out of date website annoyed me enough that I dropped them from consideration.

I agree. If you want an Alienware, get it. I think they are probably great computers. What some people here don't realize is that not everyone wants to build their own PC. And not everyone wants to deal with defective parts from each manufacturer if that happens to be the case. The main problem is that Alienware is overpriced as compared to buying the exact same parts and building it yourself. But of course that is going to be the case b/c you are paying Alienware to build it for you and you are paying them for convenience and support. So if you want a good machine and don't mind paying extra $$$ for convenience the go ahead, otherwise it is like these guys said, you will get more bang for your buck if you build your own.....it is your call.

Edit: Let it be known that I own a Dell :)

to me, Falcon-NW always seemed a little more serious than Alienware. I think they usually get better reviews, too.

This would be a great computer for me

A Mini Shuttle with 2 200gb hd + ATI Radeon 8500 AIW and a PCI Wireless card.

Oh yea, a Dell 1800fp

I don't care much for any of the Alienware cases I've seen, so I wouldn't pay $$ for them.

If you don't want to deal with the hassle of building it yourself, doing all of the setup and config and all of the subsequent tech support and you can stomach the price then I would say they are fine...people here automatically scream out "overpriced" because 1. they are expensive, and 2. everyone here assumes people *should* build their own computer....if I had no desire to build and config a system, wanted something nice and geared towards gaming and funds were not a concern then sure I would get one....why not?

I would not get a Dell though due to their outsourcing practices...but soon limiting what one buys on this believe might leave for slim pickings as it seems the wave of the future.

good luck

in what way would you say they are bloated?

I didn't build it as a bare bones system and work from there. That means it's bloated. :)

I'd build my own. I would assume that alienware could build a top of the line system just as well as I can, but it would cost at least $1000 less to build it myself.
