Who here uses lifting gloves?

I used to use lifting gloves when I was a teenager. I thought they were 'cool'...you know...black...it's manly..tough...right? Then I realized there's really no point. The only situation I could see using them is if you're doing a single rep of a very heavy weight, and that's still a big maybe...still probably not. Otherwise...you're increasing the distance from the bar to your hands...and to me it actually makes it more difficult to hold. Reducing the callouses on your hand I guess is a nice side effect but meh...I think they're silly and it's more of a social statement nowadays

I use usually see the new guys in gym or the ultra ripped steroid freaks using them. No middle ground. Im neither of those so I don't use em.
 
i don't like using them because i don't feel i'm holdin the bar with my hands.

i do however use straps on a few of my exercises (bb shrugs, bb bent over rows)

Well you're certainly not decreasing the distance. I don't think it helps improve grip at all.

How is that confusing? Gloves are horrible for your grip.
 
I bought a $10 pair, thinking they'd be helpful. Stopped using them that same week. I bought them because I convinced myself they'd be useful for things like dumbbell shrugs, where my hands would fatigue from holding the weight long before my traps would. I don't know why I thought they'd help, to be honest.

Horrible for your grip? If you're using padded gloves maybe but unless you're using chalk, you're going to get a better grip with gloves.
 
I don't. I feel like I have better control over what I'm doing without them. The calluses that form at the base of each finger as a result do get painful after a while though.
 
I also hate the feel of gloves. It only took me one workout to realize that. I'll use chalk and occasionally straps, but nothing else.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I actually like the callouses that form from weightlifting. It's like a natural glove 😉
 
Gloves indeed hurt your grip because they increase the diameter of the bar. Thicker things are hard to hold. It doesn't have to be a huge difference, but the amount added by your average lightly padded lifting glove is noticeable. That actually can make it an unintended training tool - working your grip harder = stronger grip in the end.

That said, some people prefer using them. Some because it gives them the illusion that its greatly beneficial, some because they feel it reduces wear on their hands, some out of habit, some because they just feel like it. Just a matter of personal preference, really. I don't wear gloves. I wouldn't really recommend it, particularly to beginners, but to each their own.

After that thread I decided to shed my gloves for a few weeks and to be honest I didn't like the feel of the bar on my hands and went back to using them. As for it effecting my grip it didn't make a bit of difference one way or the other.
 
I use gloves for everything except legs and I use Versa Gripps on back days. I like gloves. When I am going heavy (and I'm always going heavy) I hate getting distracted by having the bar pinch my hand, and I also do feel like I get a better grip. Versa Gripps are the best strap-type device out there.
 
i wear them so i don't get calluses on my hands. i do have some calluses at the midpoint of my finger where the glove ends.

Same here. That's the only real reason why I wear gloves. I just hate having calluses...they look and feel like shit to me. I'm looking to get myself some straps soon, though.
 
As I said in the other thread, at this point, I mainly wear them out of habit and because I actually like the feel they give to the bar. That, and my gloves also have a supportive wrist wrap, which is the main reason I initially began using them (way back when).

I don't wear them for all exercises, but I'll have them on for most upper-body routines. As for callouses, they come anyway, probably because the padding to my gloves is torn to hell at the moment.

umm dude...he's totally right.

If you have small hands maybe, if I used gloves, the extra 1mm wouldn't make a difference.
 
Lifting gloves always make me feel more powerful. I know that it's in my head. I use mechanix gloves. Another reason that i have started using gloves is that as you get older
while lifting, your hands develop calluses and overall roughness. My wife likes my hands when they are much softer, if you know what I mean
