Who here owns a 17" laptop?

My old laptop is pretty much dead, and am looking at replacing it.

My first laptop had a 12" screen, which I really liked for its compactness, and my last one was 14" which took a bit getting used to since I lug it around a lot, but never was much of an issue.

Now I'm possibly looking at going 17", since I'm a big fan of having lots of real estate, but I'm just not sure how much of a pain, if any it is to transport around all the time.

I figure though, since I'm getting something new, it should be different from what I'm used to at least..

How do you like your 17"?
 
Do not buy anything bigger than a 15" unless you're gonna use it as a desktop replacement AT HOME. My 16" laptop is heavy as fuck and doesn't fit in my man bag so it's stuck at home. Good thing I'm using it as my desktop replacement so it's not a big deal. But if I were planning on taking it with me on the go, then I would've made a serious mistake.
 
When I had my 17 inch laptop it never went anywhere. Was tooooo huge everytime I had to lug it anywhere. It was also ridiculously heavy, and it took up way too much space in university lecture halls. So I left it at home and it was basically a depowered desktop. My advice would be that 17 inch laptops are worthless if you plan on lugging it everywhere especially if you had troubles lugging around a ridiculously small 14 inch laptop
 
I find 15.4 to be a good medium. I've seen and carried a few 17 inchers and they just feel big. Like I'm carrying a small sign or something. Doesn't really feel like a laptop. On the upside they usually have better cooling IMExperience.

If you're looking for a desktop replacement though, I suggest just buying an actual desktop and a tablet for portability. More expensive, but I've found that most compromise solutions just end up being a mediocre experience for both uses they were originally intended for.

Not much difference with 15.x vs 17:

15.x = 6.57lbs (14.88 x 9.9 x 1.72)

17 = 7.55lbs (15.59 x 11.22 x 1.63)

Doesn't seem like much on paper but it really makes a big difference in practice.
 
agree with the comment that it's too big. if you don't move it around, then it's not a problem. it's 17", don't expect to put it on your lap and work like the 14 that you have.
 
17" sucks if you're going to be lugging it around alot. I've got a 17" Gateway and it's almost always at home. I miss my VAIO SRX77P.
 
I have a 17" MacBook Pro which I use as a semi-portable desktop replacement at home where I occasionally move it from room to room. Once in a great while (like for the next two days) I will bring it to work.
 
I have a fairly new Dell studio 17. It goes with me pretty easy. I have a great bag for it too. I really don't pack it around on foot much though, normally just from home to car to office or to someplace else. I love the screen size for me.
 
17" isn't too bad if you're just going to car then straight to wherever. If you travel on an airplane though...hell no would I get a 17". I own both a 17" gaming laptop and a 13.3" Studio XPs.

Pretty much have to go with what most people are saying here. A 17" laptop is NOT something you want to carry around all day. I had a 17" beast until recently when I got a 15.4" Dell and it's the perfect size for me. MUCH lighter and the screen's big enough for pretty much anything. Now that I know the difference, I would never get one over 15.4" simply because it's not really practicably portable anymore, unless I'm looking for a desktop replacement laptop.
 
Ha my aunt gave me her old 17" p4 toshiba fucker weighs ten pounds. I'm sure newer 17" notebooks are a little lighter, but they just seem too cumbersome for my taste. I'll sell this one and stick with my 15.4"

Even 15" is a bit much. My ideal size is something similar to the old 12" PowerBook G4. Now that thing was portable.
 
I can agree with that. I wouldn't mind having a smaller notebook or netbook for total portability and better battery life. As it stands though at the moment my laptop rarely gets taken places.

im a fan of a desktop and a netbook, but dont get a 17" if you plan on taking it anywhere other than on vacation where you can plant it somewhere else for a solid week. you do *not* want to haul it around.

get a smaller laptop with a higher resolution display.
 
I have a 15.6 and it's alright - I am really tempted to get a 10" netbook just for easier portability. If you had difficulty with a 14", I definitely would not recommend a 17".
 
17 is bulky and overkill.

I like the 13" and if my XPS had a docking station I'd get one of those.

15" is as big as I go.
 
I've got a 17". Travelled with it once, too huge of a pain to lug it around. It sounds like the difference in weight isn't much but when you have to carry it around for awhile, it tends to get heavier and heavier. Perhaps you can get a 17" to keep at home and a cheap netbook to carry around with you?

I do and it weighs about 10lbs. Love the screen size though, really nice for multiple VM console windows open at the same time.
