Even 15.4 is way too big for me to lug around. I had one and it was a pain in the ass. I now have a 14 and it's much better. If I had a 17, I'd give it to my girlfriend and get a 14.

My first laptop had a 12" screen, which I really liked for its compactness, and my last one was 14" which took a bit getting used to since I lug it around a lot, but never was much of an issue.

Now I'm possibly looking at going 17", since I'm a big fan of having lots of real estate, but I'm just not sure how much of a pain, if any it is to transport around all the time.

I figure though, since I'm getting something new, it should be different from what I'm used to at least..

How do you like your 17"?

just a word of caution, a bigger display wont give you more real estate, my 17 inch and my wife's 14 inch both have 1280x1024 native rels hence technically they both have the same real estate, if you are buying a 17 just for more screen space be sure you get FullHD or WSXGA+ or something similar

I got the Inspiron 9400/E1705, its a bit of a beast to lug around, but it was perfectly fine for shorter trips.
Nothing like taking it out in airplanes, it was almost as wide as the seats :)

But the resolution (1920x1200) and the size are hard to give up once you have it.

I say go for it, or maybe a 16" one

My T61 was way too big so I picked up a netbook. It was only 15.4". A 17" laptop isn't going anywhere.

I find my 17" macbook pro (non-unibody) perfectly portable it weighs (6.6lbs) less than most 15" laptops and the big difference is the thickness

I haven't found any non-macs that come close to that though

I have a 15" widescreen with a 12-cell (double-stack) battery, and it sucks to lug around. I am going to loan it to my dad to replace his ancient Inspiron 2650 after I get myself a nice 11" or 12" ultraportable/sub-notebook. My dad uses laptops for desktops anyway, never carries it anywhere.

I use my 17" on my lap all the time.

its heavy, about 10 pounds. would not work to take on trips. a 15 inch with high res screen(19x12) would have just as much real estate.

i bought mine for the dual harddrives, full size keyboard with numpad, and a couple other features.

inspiron 9300 was waay to large and a friend of mine got the 19" fujitsu which was quite insane. go with a 15" screen with a high resolution.

They have 15.4 inch screens that have the same resolution displays as the 17" laptops. (1920x1200) My next laptop will have this resolution and be 15.4"

I like my Macbook Air, 13.3" screen. Its all about the resolution. I had a 12.1" and that was a bit small. But I hate lugging around heavy laptops. Plus, if you want to use this laptop on the can, your legs wont fall asleep :p

That's a pretty heavy 15" but if you look at percentages thats a big difference, also it doesn't seem you are comparing like models.

I love my 12", I have access to a 17" and hate carrying it around. My wife wants to go to 13.3" (doesn't want a separate optical) from her 15".

dont get a 17, I had one said oh 8lbs wont be too bad to move around. Well first it took up too much of my desk at school, and it was just plain annoying to carry around becuse it was too big. I am using a 15.4 inch 5.5lbs laptop now and its all good. I will never get anything bigger or smaller.

I've had laptops of all different sizes...but was never really happy until I got my MBP 15"...seems the perfect all around size for a laptop. When my wife's MBP 15" craps out...we'll probably get her a 17"...but she rarely takes it from home...but having it "portable" is a must as she does do work away from home on occasion.

I have one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16834147985

And I love it. I don't mind its size, nor its weight, not that it's even that heavy. I prefer a laptop with a larger screen and plenty of horsepower over small and light. While I was in college I used an EEE PC 1000HE, and that was fine for portability. Now that I'm finished, I want something that's pretty much a portable workstation.

I had a big, heavy 17-incher a couple of years ago. One trip to Europe with it made me dump it for a 14.1. The 17 is almost impossible to open up and use on an airline tray table unless you are in 1st or business class. If the yahoo in front of you reclines - forget it! :)
