Having just read through most of this quickly, I have to agree with Skorb on the issue of upbringing.
I was always brought up to believe that gays were bad/disgusting etc, because my father was raised in a time when gays were considered bad/disgusting. He's too set in his ways to change his mind now (although sometimes I wish he'd can it), sadly.

I, on the other hand, changed my perspective when I went to Uni and met a few gay people for the first time. I have no problem with them now, although I do have a problem with "overly-gay" or flamboyantly-gay/camp guys, who throw it in your face constantly, and yell "sweetie darling!" when they see their friends in a crowded room.
That is fvcking annoying. Free speech and all, but they really could turn it down just a bit. I imagine it's them venting for a few years of pent-up homosexual feelings and bullying, but there's easier ways to vent than turning yourself into a giant, screaming, limp-wristed fruit salad. :)

[Edit]ed for retarded use of the italic tag.

I compare that behavior to piercing every available protrusion or slight bump on your bod, or covering large areas of your skin in tats.......

It seems to me that most people here are scared to death to be labeled gay. They'd never wear a pink shirt in fear that they'd be called gay. They'd never get a manicure in fear they'd be called gay.

Uhh..but what straight guy gets a manicure, honestly. I am not homophobic, but I have to draw the line somewhere. I couldn't care less if any of my friends were gay, but there is a gay guy at school who is fvcking annoying. The sad thing is, everyone called him gay before they found out, just cause he WAS annoying.

My gf is a manicurist, she gives me manicures every so often, pedicures too...it's great. Then we do it like bunnies on the floor.

Yes, it's funny how the stongarm "pink is gay" and "manicures are gay" people go back under their rock once they realize that ATOT isn't like the group of their redneck friends who all agree with them. My family is southern-based.. a lot of family in Alabama/Georgia/Florida and they have strong Christian values. They make anti-gay comments all the time but wouldn't bat an eye at me if I wore a pink shirt or got my nails done. I'll admit, I'm not so concerned with my appearance that I need to really worry about what color shirt I'm going to wear or whether or not my nails look pretty. I wash my hands often and keep my nails cut... not really sure how a manicure would help me past that.

I don't hate gays. I just love to joke or poke fun about them with my hetero friends. Flamboyant gays are comic relief in my eyes. I make fun of fat people too behind their backs. Does that make me hate fat people?

I wouldn't say I hate gay men or women, I just don't like them! What they are doing is just plain wrong and I'm not a religious person, I just don't think that's what nature had in mind when men and women evolved.
I also don't like fat women with tight clothes and/or big hair, people who drink PBR, Crackheads, Crankheads, Potheads.D!(kheads, Deadheads( Just kidding) Metalheads, Punk rocker types, Men who beat women. Illegal immigrants, The color Orange.
Everybody has a right to have his or her own opinion, how they express it is a different matter.
I don't openly bash gays unless they are Flaming Gay, Sorry but if your so proud of being gay that you feel the need to stand out, I'm going to have a good laugh at your expense.
Oh yeah did I say Fat women in tight clothes.

Damn, how sad...makes me fear for the future of this country. The SAME dumb*** arguments were made 50 years ago about blacks. No one seems to see the obvious parallels. Hate mongering homophobe=hate mongering racist. If you don't like gays, shut your mouth and be nice anyway.

I hear the stupid arguments about gay marriage "undermining the institution of marriage"... Just how in the hell does it DO that? No one ever answers this question when I challenge that statement. Cuz there is no answer. It has NO effect on hetero marriage.

Yeah, admittedly I do feel like a jerk when I do that. It is a hard habit to break unfortunately.

I strongly beileve gays shouln't be allowed to adopt childeren.

I agree. How would you like to be a straight child and have two fathers. That'd definitely cause some psychlogical problems.

I'm white, i went to a white high school where no one was openly gay to my knowledge. I came to college and roomed with a cool black guy for 2 years and now I live with a gay housemate. I guess college really is a social education!

LOL, it never occured to me (and I'm a smart guy) that homophobia meant the "fear of being labelled as gay."
That's interesting way to see it. I've seen homophobia more like racism, where a person hates/fears gays because of his differences. White people that are prejudiced towards black people aren't afraid of being labelled as black.

Further to my point... I am a white heterosexual male who is not prejudiced towards people who are different in some minor or major way (sexual preference and skin color seem like minor differences to me). I don't fear people who are different from me, nor do I hate them. I am also not afraid of being mislabeled - if someone says "you're gay" to me, it slides off just as easily as if someone says "you're black!" because A) I know myself that they are wrong and B) because I know there is nothing disgraceful, wrong or evil about being "gay" or "black". I figured out around first grade that there is nothing "wrong" with "being black" and although it was popular (in most of the schools, groups, companies and towns I've been a part of or lived in) to pretend that "being black" is "very bad" I never went along with pretending that. Likewise, when I learned about sex, that it is something people do because they like to do it, I figured out that "doing it" is not wrong as long as the other person(s) you are doing it with agree to doing it. I never chose to pretend that there is only one "right way" to do it and that other ways are "wrong" even though it is extremely popular to pretend that only one way is right and that the gay way is "wrong" and "bad." To put it another way, I was and still am able to think for myself, and stand up for what I know instead of just going along with the crowd.

If a white straight male fears being called gay, it's as asinine and irrational as fearing being called black. The only explanation for such an irrational fear is to be so lacking of self-esteem that one needs others to value him and approve of him so that he can feel worthy. He fears losing the approval of others which is the only thing that makes him feel worthy of existing. Pretty pathetic, and I hope this helps people see why "homophobes" are the fearful and hateful little parasites that they are. Go easy on them, and try to help them value themselves because they approve of themselves instead of valuing themselves only because others approve of them. Help them to become logical and to realize that they do not need to go along with others to be worth something.

edit: 39 people said "yes". I'm taken back by this. I guess living in the bay area shelters me from the fact that there's still racists and bigots in this world. And if you think being homophobic is nothing like being a racist then you need to open your eyes.

Well it is just a web poll, and its prone to error, but at least it shows that some people are honest. I would surmise that just about anywhere besides SF the percentage of homophobes is well over 75% IRL (there's a lot of pathetic people that go along with the crowd to fit in).

As long as they don't try anything, I'm okay. It's funny I told my friend who was ranting about how this guy is gay and I told him even gays have standards. :D
