Just took the subway back & forth to work for the first time, it was interesting...

Employer has a $30/month deal for transportation use, it'll save me about $200/month.

If I score one of those old lady grocery carts, I could do without a car...

when it's not eleventy billion degrees outside i take the bus. it doesn't come often enough and it stops way too often. and the route-schedule is designed by idiots.

$1.25 each way $3.25 a day $45 a month, but 6 to 6 six days a week, always wondering if they're on time, heat, rain, snoe, ice.
But it is cheap. If you're going where the buses run.

I do. $21 a week for unlimited use within certain boundaries, compared to $30 a week just for petrol plus the guarantee that I'll have to pay $20-40 a week for parking. It just doesn't make sense to drive here unless I'm going to be at uni by 7am. Not saying this doesn't happen, but it's the exception, not the rule.

Taking the bus would require walking about half the distance between me and work in order to get to and from where the buses travel, and it would take nearly 3x longer than driving.

I do. It is quite convenient here. I'll be moving to Toronto and one of the major decisions in where to live will be proximity to a transit line to get to work.

I was in London, Paris and Rome about a month back and I used the subways to get around and I liked it. If I lived somewhere with a subway system like london or paris I would use it for sure. I'm not sure what the buses were like there, I didn't take them, but when I was at school the buses came by about every 20-30 minutes, so it was a pain if you missed it. The subways were practically every minute, it was awesome.

Rome's subway is basically non-existant. Only 2 lines.

Even Rome's is better than nothing though. The 2 lines form an X and basically allows you to quickly get from one rough part of the city to another. From then you would catch a bus. I agree it's now where near what a good subway system should be but it's not horrible.

London's on the other hand is just fucking amazing. It's expensive as hell but Sooo well laid out and convenient!!

They keep increasing their fares over the years and it has become so bloody expensive that it no longer offsets the cost and convenience of driving your car downtown. You can always apply at Metrostate or UCD to get a RTD pass (ID) and drop the course before deadline

this. my friend graduated 5 years ago, and still registers and drops classes at CCD every semester to get the free pass.

they keep raising the price because they keep voting down the tax increase so they have to supplement the rising cost of operation somehow.

I wish. Here, there's only a few metro bus lines. Assuming I'm going to work, one way bus is 1.5-2 hours and $4, so 3-4 hours total daily commute and $8. One way car is 15 minutes and 98 cents in gas, netting 30 minute daily commute and $1.96 in gas. Once you factor in insurance, general maintenance, and maybe loan payments it does get more expensive to drive, though. Given the fact I'd have to spend a huge chunk of my free time on buses that have less than a 75% on-time rate, I'll pass.

Besides, busses don't even run the hours I work, so it's a moot point

I ride a moped to work (I live and work in Honolulu). It's been broke for a couple of weeks, so I've been taking the bus. Not bad. $2.50 each way. Bus stops on my block at home and drops me off about two block away from work.

I'm thinking about taking the Metro rail to downtown. It costs me about $90 a week for gas just to drive to work and the Metro rail will save me a couple hundred a month as well. I'd just have to drive to the station and leave my car there.

PDX's public transit is pretty extensive, but it's grown far larger and way more expensive than it ever should have been.

I wish we had public transportation. It would be cheaper instead of driving 10 miles through town and the rest of traffic just to get to work. I wish I still lived within a mile of work, before moving in with a couple friends to save money. It cost less overall to live with them, but it was nice having a 5 minute commute and the ability to just walk or ride my bike if need be.
