Um Jules...I hate to break it to you, but drinks are actually supposed to be mixes of various ingredients. By your logic, I can use the same exact recipe and call it a long island iced tea. Or a screwdriver, or a bloody mary, or just about any drink with vodka in it. I think the drink you have there is chilled vodka. A martini should taste like a martini, not like a cold glass of booze and a martini tastes like a mix of vodka/gin, dry vermouth, and either olive or onion.

I used to like stoli and ketel 1 personally...my drink of choice was always a nice scotch...sometimes on a rock depending on the weather.

Yoda has good taste and now has my upmost respect...

You tried Absenthe? I gotta buddy with a spoon and he said if you want to experience a totally different "buzz"...

My poison; Import Beer...

Screw domestics, they are all horse piss...start me with some Ronas or maybe some Sol or Grolsche and I will progress to Bacardi Rum and Coke with lime twist and possible Bourbon and coke...On a rough nite, I may take double shots of jager, but that sh!t is just plain nasty...

A good crisp, clean Dry Vermouth Martini with a dash of olive juice and garnished with olive is just the thing for a relaxing night...

But then you can always get excited about this summer...Marguerittas by the pool...

Absinthe to me tasted like lemongrass and mint personally. It really is just an all-around pleasant drink to sip on...plus you get like a little kid-like rush when your drink changes color after pouring in the sugar water. I've had it several times and never really did any "tripping" or the distortion you're supposed to get. I think I remember reading somewhere that you had to drink a fairly large amount pretty damn quickly to get anything out of the wormwood.

With the beer, I think we're in contradiction. I went to college in NYC, home of a hundred different microbreweries and some of my all time favorite beers have come from NY. I recall fondly the saranac 12 beers of winter/xmas. The caramel porter is the definitive xmas beer for me. Plus they used to put an incredible belgian white. Magic hats are always good and crisp. If you like grolsch, IIRC brooklyn brewery brews up a seasonal ipa and esb ale every couple years that you'll probably enjoy. Plus...say what you will about the their money or their weather, but canadian micros make insanely awesome beer. Don't get me wrong, I've spent many a fond night pulling down a nice guiness from the cupboard after a big meal, but I think it's a little premature to say all domestics are crap.

One of my favorite meals in college was a bottle of ketel and a jar of pickled herring. Seperately...meh, but pickled herring is the greatest vodka chaser known to man. psst...I didn't finish the whole bottle...before someone goes OMG ALCOHOL POISONING!!!

Down by the pool, you should try a washington apple martini. It's a summery fruity drink which is so-so, but for some reason, it piques female curiosity and they inevitably want one of their own after asking for a taste.

I heard it's top of the class when it comes to vodka, I'm going to try it next time I get a drink

I had a couple Grey Goose martinis over the weekend with my friends.

It is the best. There is no other.

Edit-Here's my recipe for the best martini:

Fill shaker with ice
Pour in Grey Goose
Cover and shake until your hand is frozen to the side of the shaker
Strain immediately into a cocktail glass
Enjoy!

NONONONONO!!!! Never shake a Martini!! I don't care what Bond says. It melts ice into the drink, and (more of a problem with gin than vodka) it aerates the liquor. This does the same thing to it as letting wine breathe - it gets rid of the tang. But with a Martini, the tang should be so subtle anyway that you can't afford to lose any of it.

Shaking is wrong unless you're at a urinal.

If you need it that cold, keep the bottle in the bloody freezer packed in bags of ice.

What the hell are you TALKING about??? You areate wine to make it taste better, it's called breathing....You shake it with ice so the ice melts with the alcohol and tones down the taste...unless you are after a frat party guzzling fest, shake your martini..and then light a great cuban and sit back and relax...

First of all, the difference in water content isn't going to speed up intoxication one way or another - thanks for the frat comment.

Second, the quality or your liquor should be high enough that you don't need to water down the flavour.

Third, the aeration which is good for (some) wine, is bad for martinis, because the vermouth should be used in a small enough amount that it is a subtle flavour. Aerating that will mute the bite, and that tiny bite is important. And that aeration also tones down the bite of gin, which also ruins a gin martini.

The bite is an important part of the martini. If you don't want that, you might as well just drink vodka on the rocks.

Grey Goose is good but I prefer a nice, smooth bottle of Boomerang. Maybe Banker's Club if I'm feeling especially outlandish.

i do shots and grey goose is sooo smoothe compared to stoli, ketel one and absolute. i feel it is worth the price 🙂

LMAO. If you're gonna be a beer snob, be a freaking beer snob. You bag on "domestics" and then drink the Coors Lights of other countries as if they were somehow better?!

If you were an actual beer snob, you'd know about all the great beers made in America.

I bought a bottle of Grey Goose when I finished my BSEE about 2 years ago. I kept it in the freezer and only got it out on special occasions. Super smooth going down. Unarguably the best vodka I've tasted.

You want a rough Martini? You don't want a smooth martini? Read Modern Drunkard, get a clue on how Martinis are supposed to be made...the best liquor is smooth and has very little twang...unless you like drinking stuff like apple puckers and the like...

To each his own I suppose...The frat comment was not supposed to be insulting however. Sorry 'bout that...

Ok, do you not understand the difference between Import and Domestic? Just as Corona is domestic in Mexico...Bud Light is import to Mexico...

There are very few American beers I can stand...only one being MGD, that is the low end of the spectrum...

I am not trying to be a beer snob, I just prefer imported beer over American...

Bass, Grolsch, Sol, Tecate, Modelo, Sapporo, even Corsendonk (Belgian Monk brewed)

So as I said before, to each his own...

Pabst is monkey piss, though...

What's in a washington apple martini?

Yes, the liquor should be smooth, especially for vodka. Gin should have it's slightly astringent character. But the twang from the vermouth should be preserved.

If you wanted a truly smooth Gin martini, you should avoid London Dry brands and try Plymouth Gin. It's what Churchill drank, and it's easy going down. I once spent a hot afternoon playing soccer and drinking it warm and straight concealed in a water bottle. That's something I wouldnt' even try with Tanq or Bombay.

Edit: I'm thinking that our difference of opinion is based on the fact that I'm a gin fan, and you might be a vodka fan. It could be the difference in liquors is what affects the difference in technique.

Also, read the MDM article called "The Perfect Martini." It's one of my favourites.

And both are relatively tasteless pilsners, yet you claim to prefer one over the other just because one was transported across an international border (and often costs more)...

True that. If you would prefer to drink the Coors Light of another country and even pay more for the privelege, I say more power to ya! There's nothing wrong with preferring pilners and lighter ales, but there's plenty of good ones brewed in the US....if you take the time to find them.

Let me say this:
My true love with ANY meal is a dark ale (Bass, Killians Red (for lighter meals), Modelo Negra, Guinness, Corsendonk), but Corona's have a better taste (to me) than anything and has a lighter body for hot summer days...

But no beef with you man, at least you enjoy criticizing beer like I do...we just differ on taste buds...

Killian's is a domestic! CHECKMATE! 😛

Actually, I like just about every beer you've listed. I'm really just arguing over semantics. 🙂

Damn....I fold, your right...there are a handful of good domestics out there, but you apparently have to hunt them down...

Now, in rebuttal, Killians is about as light as I will go while eating...I love that dark beer, and Killians is not THAT dark...

Touche, I have been pwned....

I can't believe Killians is brewed by Coors....I always drink it on tap...

2 beers for Jzero :beer::beer:

EDIT - BTW, those are Black and Tans....drink up...

I personally like Absolut over most of the other brands listed. The differnce is I do NOT drink it straight and only sometimes have martinis. I prefer a little Vanilla Absolut in my OJ with a splash of Galliano (sp?). I do have a bottle of GG and Kettle One but I keep those for guests who like straight or vodka martinis. The Bombay is for those who prefer gin martinis...

Taste is complelty subjective, I find that I don' like Stoli, Sky, or Belvadere (sp?) at all but again, thats my opinion. My wife and I tend to be more picky about our wines as we do alot more tasting of that than anything else.

It's a top shelf brand, but it's not quite the best you can get. It's one of my favorites though.
