I really need to know. Most people in the USA ignore Research In Motion (RIM) and the Blackberry(BB) brand.

RIM has a new phone being announced in about 5 days (Jan 30).

I have to ask. have you researched the technology that BB10 brings to the table?

Start here and spend 2 minutes of your day starting your journey into learning about it. It actually is interesting, I promise.

I really haven't taken the time to look at BB10 or the new hardware. I just can't even imagine what they could possibly do at this point to make me leave Android for them. I'd sooner buy an iPhone than a Blackberry at this point.

The only thing I looked into was the keyboard, which looks neat but nothing groundbreaking, imho.

Does autocomplete in 3 different languages at once? Learns that you miss certain letters off center over time so it is more accurate?

If you were to buy a new phone, would you feel as thoguh you should educate yourself on available options?

Problem is I don't even think of it as an option. A really important thing is apps and the eco system. I'm invested in iOS and Android. Mean while BB10 is starting with far less, will probably have big important gaps and can't even remotely get me to leave behind what I already invested in.

So I really don't think of them as an option, because I think their boat has sailed. I may look at it a little closer at some point, I do realize I'm speaking from an uneducated opinion. I just have heard nothing at all that has gotten my interest up in BB10 though.

I feel like I walked into a survey, but I'm not being offered anything in exchange for my time. :)

thats great, and im sure bb10 will be the best messaging/secure email/meeting planning device of all time, but smartphones have moved beyond communication and into entertainment.

Zero interest in this DOA OS

Should probably at least wait until the announcement before you completely write it off. They might even have a few surprises in store.

There will always be a market for devices designed primarily for communication. RIM just needs to make sure they can hold on to that market.

So basically the opposite of the kindle HD keyboard and auto correct. I could type better on my original t9 flip phone from 1999.

Apparently you've never installed different keyboards on Android. Can't remember which one, but one keyboard on Android actually had dynamic key size which would change as it learned how you type.

So no, nothing groundbreaking.

Ya, BB10 will have movies, music and books in their store now.

BB10 will do everything a Droid can do. I's going to provide a much better interface for navigating the OS though (compared to iOS and Android). Also, a large focus for them has been to make it a device that focuses on communication from the ground up. All social media is integrated tightly (read about the BB10 hub)

We ignore them because they ignored us.

This.

BB has a huge image problem. Sat on their hands while the rest of the mobile world ran past them, thinking they could bank on profits from the corporate segment. In the meantime, average Joe citizen invested in IOS or Android.

I love my Blackberry, but I can't fault anyone for ignoring them.

Yes and no, I know about it and the basics of the interface and features but I can't say that I have done anything close to extensive research on it. I'll probably read some launch reviews just to see how it turned out but there is essentially no chance that I would leave Android for it.

The smartphone revolution started in 2007, it is now 2013. It took RIM 6 years to evolve, so I think I'll wait a year or two for their OS to mature.

At least MS and Nokia did something to adapt to the changing industry.

I'll definitely take a look at the phones once they release and are in stores, but I do not see myself switching over. I really like Android and have no desire to switch.

It looks pretty interesting imo, I was looking at the screenshots from the gold build of the software and it looks like a pretty well fleshed out OS as far as the settings go, looks like it'll have HDMI mirroring and it had an option for volume boost with headphones attached which is something I wish android had (I've tried apps but haven't found one that works on the N4 yet).

I'd consider switching to it if it has great battery life and good hardware but right now my nexus 4 is keeping me really happy so I don't have much of a reason to switch besides just wanting to try out new things.

That's perception.

When smart phones were first coming out, they didn't think anyone would buy a phone that needs to have it's battery charged every 4 hours. They were wrong in this simple assumption.

So, they started developing BB10 later than intended. And it took a while to create from the ground up.

And now it is here. It's worth a look.

BB10 is going to try and do the same thing Windows Phone 7/8 tried to do with less than half the time and effort that Microsoft put in. It has no future.

It has taken Microsoft something like two years of insane effort and struggle to get where they are now marketshare wise. If Microsoft can't do it there's not even the tiniest chance a half baked company like RIM could.

It's even worse than that. Microsoft can endlessly pour money into Windows Phone because the future is clearly mobile. RIM does not have that luxury. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft is just waiting for BB10 to fail them scoop up relevant parts of their business on the cheap.

The key difference between Windows Phone and Blackberry is that no one has really heard about Windows Phone (surprising, I know), but people clearly have a negative perception of Blackberry. The latter is far harder to correct than the former.
