Have seen it prior (recently in SuRgEoN's ill advised McDonald's rant), but to assume the above premise in a community as large as Anandtech is beyond presumptive.

Given how anyone of such wealth is in such an extreme minority it's not arrogant at all.

In the past, certainly - as little as 15 to 20 years ago it would be extremely uncommon. It is however much more probable in recent years.

The argument wasn't about an increase in probability. That has little to do with the fact that it's still an extreme minority of people. If you calculate the number of those with a net wealth equal to or exceeding that amount, the number of people in the US (just to make it simple), and then figure out the number of people regularly on the AT forums it would be easy to assume that he was right. I would imagine we're talking a small fraction of 1 percent of people.

net worth or availailable cash on hand?

My net worth is about -$120,000 (few people have +, even though they think they are rich and drive fancy cars)

My availalbe cash (if I were to cash out investments) is about $50,000.

Really? I would think that most people would have a positive net worth...
My debts: 1 car, student loans, loan on current home, and soon to be loan on 2nd home - keeping the 1st home.

Assets: Value of home 1 is worth far more than the debt on it.
Value of home 2 and land is worth far more than the debt on it...
The value of the vehicle is probably slightly less than what is owed on it (but not by a lot)
At this point, I should be about even. Very few credit card debts.

Now, if you consider the value of my possessions... I should definitely be on the positive side.

I really don't see how most people would/could end up very far negative, except perhaps during their first few years out of school, or if they frittered away every cent that they made on completely entertainment and leisure types of activities which retain 0 value. (ie. travel, going to the theater to watch movies constantly) Not that those activities are bad themselves - they're not - but you can't spend all of your disposable income on such things.

it's awesome that people would actually post that info.

Internet is anonymous.

I will post the day that my net worth is a little over $0. Maybe when I figure it's $10,000 or so. That will be the best day of my life.

I will also post when:
- pay off my home. (10-15 years)
- I have $1 million (10-15 years)
- I quit my job. (10-15 years coincidentally)

I admire people that nef for a reason. :)

nef :)
