Schwinn Apple Crate. Supposedly, they're somewhat collectible now.
They had different names depending on the color: Apple Krate (red), Orange Krate (orange..duh), and the Silver Ghost or something (the silver one you had).Originally posted by: BDawg

That's really similar to mine, except mine was silver with red trim.
I begged and begged and begged for a Redline, but never got one. I'm still in therapy to this day.Originally posted by: Amused
I had a Schwinn Stingray frame converted to a BMX bike until I got my first Redline square back frame and built that up. It was stolen outside the neighborhood arcade after school one day.![]()

I didn't myself, but my neighbor had one of the Schwinns with the banana seat and 3-speed "stickshift" on the center bar.
Gotta love bikes of the mid-late '70s
What a time to grow up:
-Saturday morning was cartoon/kid show nirvana
-Parents let us kids walk around the neighborhood without armed escort
-Nobody would wear helmets/kneepads/etc for bike riding and skateboarding
Now you are getting me into nostalgia mode again......... oil came in cans, soda cans had tabs that you PULLED OFF, TVs had only manual rotary tuners, etc.......

Honestly, they're not practical for anything other than a kid's bike. Modern seats are actually comfy if you take the time to shop for one that fits your butt. It's kinda like shoes, not everyone can just grab a pair of Nike's and go.Originally posted by: Kiyup
They have to be much more comfortable than the seats in use today. Why didn't they stick around?

OK - Let's all own up and admit it.
How many of you used the clothspin and playing card in the spokes technique to give your bicycle that "motorcycle" sound?

My friends had these in the 5-speed variety, and they had a smaller front tire, IIRC.Originally posted by: ScoobMaster
