Schwinn Apple Krate. Supposedly, they're somewhat collectible now.

That's really similar to mine, except mine was silver with red trim.
They had different names depending on the color: Apple Krate (red), Orange Krate (orange..duh), and the Silver Ghost or something (the silver one you had).

There was a yellow one called the Lemon Peeler too IIRC.

I had a Schwinn Stingray frame converted to a BMX bike until I got my first Redline square back frame and built that up. It was stolen outside the neighborhood arcade after school one day. :(

I begged and begged and begged for a Redline, but never got one. I'm still in therapy to this day. :(

I didn't myself, but my neighbor had one of the Schwinns with the banana seat and 3-speed "stickshift" on the center bar.

Gotta love bikes of the mid-late '70s

What a time to grow up:
-Saturday morning was cartoon/kid show nirvana
-Parents let us kids walk around the neighborhood without armed escort
-Nobody would wear helmets/kneepads/etc for bike riding and skateboarding

Now you are getting me into nostalgia mode again......... oil came in cans, soda cans had tabs that you PULLED OFF, TVs had only manual rotary tuners, etc.......

I had a Huffy, it was a decent bike. Worked well and was cheap. That was all I needed. :)

I begged too! But by eighth grade I had saved up enough from odd jobs to buy the frame. After that, I started buying parts.

To be honest, that old Stingray frame was indestructible. I used to take jumps on that thing that make me cringe just thinking about it today. :)

We lived in the north part of the San Fernando Valley. About one block from where they were building the 118 (Simi Valley) freeway. It took them an unbelievable amount of time to finish that section, and thus was a construction site from the time I was in Kindergarten, to after I graduated High School. After 10th grade, we took our off-road motorcycles over there and tore the place up.

And just north of the freeway construction site was the wide open hills. It was a great place to live if you were into off roading :)

I modded my 26" Murray back in the '60s. High rise handle bars, banana seat with fenders stripped off. It was a cruiser among weenie "wheelie bikes". I came close to buying a "Chopper" by Raleigh or Orange Crate by Schwinn, but after riding one a little while, I said screw it. I needed to travel distances and a 20" bike just didn't cut it. I ended up with a 3 speed Raleigh Sport instead. Still have it 35 years later!

Honestly, they're not practical for anything other than a kid's bike. Modern seats are actually comfy if you take the time to shop for one that fits your butt. It's kinda like shoes, not everyone can just grab a pair of Nike's and go.

Along these lines: once pro cyclists find a saddle they like, some will even go so far as to pack it into their luggage when traveling by plane to a race for fear the bike were to be stolen and their carefully-broken-in saddle along with it.

OK - Let's all own up and admit it.

How many of you used the clothspin and playing card in the spokes technique to give your bicycle that "motorcycle" sound?

;) :)

We (my brothers and I) never did that. Though all my neices and nephews have done it.

Hah! i had a little pink huffy that my parents bought at a garage sale. Loved that thing. But it had the pedal brakes...so I kinda hurt myself really bad when I was in 4th grade. Riding down a hill...got slightly knocked over by someone's side mirror and collapsed and stuff. It was so bad. :(

My friends had these in the 5-speed variety, and they had a smaller front tire, IIRC.

Mine was a purple huffy with banana seat. It was called the purple ghoul or something like that.

12th birthday, 1966..

Schwinn Sting-Ray Fastback 5-spd,sky-blue.

Righteous :gift:

We used baseball cards instead of playing cards, I was just talking a couple of days ago with a buddy about how much those baseball cards would be worth now.

I just got my son a Huffy version of the "Big Wheel" three wheller. Remember those? This one's all metal with a rubber front tire (as opposed to the old school plastic ones). And the hand brakes on the handle, instead of the lever style hand brake on the rear tire.

I hop on the back bar while he drives, man I haven't had that much fun in a long time.:)
