Anyone gave the new 23.1.1 drivers a spin yet?
I just noticed they are up after searching for them. For some reason, the Radeon software doesn't find them, even when I tell them to search for an update. The software says I am up to date with 22.12.2. I may have to do a download manually and try them out.

They are understandably doing a staggered release to their customers. Don't want all of them to be impacted by a nasty bug that went unnoticed by their QA team.

This is the channel I use to keep myself informed about Radeon drivers, maybe interesting for others here: https://youtube.com/@AncientGameplays

He owns and uses multiple different Radeon cards himself, tests all drivers and always talks about them, and other things regarding Radeon. A stark contrast to other YouTubers.
Yeah some great content there. He'll surely have a rundown/round of testing with the new driver soon.

Also not just Radeon (but primarily tho), he also has pretty extensive GeForce and even Arc testing.

Pretty much.
Tho I read from someone claiming inside info that the next one will be a unified driver. Not sure if it's the rumored big January driver or just a regular release.

New driver fixes a lot of issues, VR performance under “known issues” so it will be fixed soon I guess:
Would you recommend upgrading to it? Does the power draw improve for single high refresh monitor usage? Since I would have to download the drivers manually, would there be any issues upgrading, for instance in relation to my settings/OC profile?

I can only speak about what I saw in the video, but I trust this guy and the driver is WHQL’ed, so yes. Generally from what I’ve heard there were no bad driver releases since a very long time for team red.

I upgraded to it and the only difference I noticed is that the Witcher 3 no longer crashes

It kinda seems like my power usage wasn't affected by the new drivers. Not sure, but for instance, with just this browser and the Radeon software up, anything else minimized, I get about 38W reported. When I first bring up the Radeon software window though, it reads about 50W, possibly due to Aero effect.

Of course I have a different card, the Sapphire Nitro XTX, with +8% power limit.

I changed the thread title to include the 7900XT, since IEC has one.

@IEC

How does your 7900XT stack up against a 6950XT, according to your impressions? One can purchase a 7900XT off the AMD store right now for MSRP. It's the 7900XTX that's still sold out.

Are you seriously considering the 7900 XT? I think it would be better to wait for the fixed silicon refresh with 3 GHz clockspeed.

No. But he bought one so I'd like to know how he feels about it.

I'll probably just bite the bullet and pay extra for a 7900XTX off the secondary market if AMD doesn't make more available in the next month. Mission #1 is getting a launch-day 7950X3D.

Is that even more than a rumor? I don’t think there’s anything “broken” with Navi31.

If you're having trouble finding one, craigslist tends to be better than ebay or other sites, especially since there is no sales tax. I did with this with a 4090 after wasting weeks with the stock tracking apps for various retailers.

No not really, but these sources aren’t reliable, more like in the realm of rumours and hearsay. Partly I knew of them. We will see more later when the refresh and smaller chips are released, but Navi31 can already easily reach over 3 GHz at the cost of more power - so I don’t see this issue at all.

Mine is a XFX Merc model which has aftermarket (14" long) cooler. It has an anti-sag bracket but that extends the card length even longer which would hit my radiator. So I rigged up my own anti-sag support.

It's a definite upgrade compared to my 6800XT. I tune my GPUs and CPUs to run daily at sane power limits, so all CPUs get capped at a PPT of 95W and GPUs typically have -10% max frequency (or 70% power limit for nV) imposed. In some instances I'm basically getting a 50% boost in performance, though I am using almost as much more additional power compared to my 6800XT. The 6800XT is insanely efficient as long as you stay below 950mV on the stock voltage curve.

For example, with Folding@Home:
7900XT - 4.0-4.5M PPD. Optimal power usage seems to be with -10% max frequency which uses 230-250W while folding and GPU clocks stay around 2450-2500MHz.
6800XT - 2.7-3.2M PPD. Optimal power usage seems to be with -10% max frequency which uses 160-170W while folding and GPU clocks stay around 2050-2100MHz.
3080 10GB - 5.5-6M PPD. I have this one set to 70% power limit. It still boosts between 2000-2100 MHz. At 250-260W.

Is it worth the cost? Only if you need to get over a certain level of performance. A top notch 6950XT runs $699 with 2 games on sale right now, so if you have a good PSU that can handle the power and transient spikes it's the better bang for the buck.

I suspect that's why AMD priced these at $900. At $700 or $750 it would be a deal but basically kill sales of 6900/6950XT. I anticipate prices to drop because at $900 it is DOA compared to a 7900XTX which is the better value.

Not doa at all cause the XTX currently retails for way more than just 100 bucks more, more like 300 bucks more. MSRP is still irrelevant.

You can run a reference 7900 XTX ($999) which out of the box will outperform an aftermarket 7900 XT by significantly more % than the price difference %. 7900XT is objectively bad value in a generation of bad value cards.

Yes if you could buy a XTX for 1000$ that is. A few lucky ones have, that’s not the case for most people. The most people bought one for 1300+. It’s simply not available for 1000. You get a ref XT for 970€ here. https://www.mindfactory.de/Hardware/Grafikkarten+(VGA)/Radeon+RX+Serie/RX+7900+XTX.html

I looked at Newegg too, not really better. Everything sold out, it will 100% be overpriced and not available for 1000$. MSRP is meaningless since 2 generations.

There's a vanishingly small number of people willing to shell out >$1000 for a GPU. Especially heading into a recession.

I'd give it a month or two before prices normalize.
