Is there anyone like me who is waiting for a reason to upgrade? I've never come across anything my system can't run well. And while the nf4 boards are nice, and a 6800gt would be fun, that same $1200 gets me a week on Maui. I'd like to see some real wizbang games come out that could really drive all the new hardware to it's limit, then I'd invest in a top of the line rig.

I believe the new Venis cores will be Strained Silicon with SOI right?? Or am I wrong???

Do you guys think that waiting for the Venice cores to come out (April 5 is it?) will lower the price on the standard 90nm Athlon 64s?

I wouldn't mind having the prices go down a notch or two.

Also, is there more to the Venice core? Better OC'ing seems a bit... well, a waste. It's already damn near top of the line.

Venice cores are supposed to allow use of four sticks of memory at 1t command rate and DDR400 instead of DDR333.

So do the new Venice cores. They are supposed to have a much better on die memory controller that overclockers will benefit from. The only fault of the Winchester is the mem controllers, as they scale down to ddr333 with 4 dimms, as SNM stated. I dont think that the prices on the Winnies will go down though, I think that they will all be about the same, with the Venices mixing in with the rest and slowly replacing them. The nomenclature doesnt make it too easy for the consumer to distinguish between the processors (though intel is starting to use confusing name systems also).

are there any mobos that will have 2 sockets of 939 cpus coming out anytime this year?
I wanna keep my winnie 3000+ and get rid of that Neo2... if its worth it.

90nm with sSOI (which the 90nm Winchester does not have), SSE3 (probably negligable but should give a a small performance boost in some cases), and a supposed improved memory controller.

The improved frabrication process should lead to higher clocks, which intitial first few chips have confirmed (whether or not they were cherry picked will be revealed when the chips hit the market)
However one of the most lucrative change could very well be the improved memory controller. If these chips can indeed do 4 sticks of DDR @ 1T then they'll be a major improvement indeed as 4 x 512MB is a much cheaper path to 2GB than 2 x 1GB.

dual core gonna do absolutely NOTHING for gaming performance, but it may allow you keep running background stuff while gaming.

i'm going to wait until they've been out for a little while and hopefully single core prices will drop..then i'll jump on one of those and get dual core in a year or so once software i use starts taking advantage of it

Ummm yeah it will. Give game developers time to multithread the games and you will see improvements.

The next UT engine is multi threaded for SMP.
However I just don't "game". CS:S a lot though :)

The developers will be coming out with games that will take advantage, trust me ;)
People will grab up these games if anything to test thier new dual cpu's LOL

I've been doing a lot divx encoding for my 4 year old.
She clicks on an icon on her pc and can be entertained for a while.

Most all encoders take advantage of dual cpu's now.

I am building a PC in summer so of course I am waiting for venice.
I just can't wait for dual cores. Still too far away...
Well who cares; kudos to AMD socket 939 we can upgrade to dual cores without upgrading motherboards

Well dual cores single thread can match single core performance I'd be upgrading.

Multithreading within the code for a single process has nothing to do with it. So I'll assume when you say multithreading, you're speaking of the machines ability to send machine code for the same process to multiple CPUs to handle it, which by way, still has to happen sequentially. The cpus just don't have to wait for the registers and code to show up cause it'll already be there.

^Incorrect. Current games are written to be sequential and single threaded because that's what hardware was available. However, games can be EASILY multithreaded, since they are a compilation of so many different functions. For example:

You're running down a corridor somewhere in Black Mesa North (you know they're working on a third one already:p). While the first core is sending graphic information to the GPU and preloading textures that'll be appearing around the corner in a few moments, the second core is doing physics calculations and controlling enemy AI - possibly running sound as well. With traditional processors, this had to be all done at once and done right in sequence. With dual cores, tasks can be delegated out (much like SLI does) depending on workload and there is now enough processing power to start prefetching things, rather than loading them right when they're needed. Gaming has a LOT to gain from dual cores in the long run, they just have to be designed to take advantage of multithreading.
